Our Learning Community...
What an incredible week at Jones Elementary! We are so grateful for the many ways our families and staff come together to make our school such a special place. A huge thank-you to everyone who joined us for our Cali-Q BBQ! Having families join their children for lunch was such a treat. The smiles, conversations, and time spent together made the day extra special.
We also loved seeing the excitement and participation throughout Wellness Week! So many students joined in by wearing the color of the day, and classrooms engaged in meaningful conversations about ways to care for our physical and mental health. Wellness is a priority all year long and this week gave us a wonderful opportunity to put an extra spotlight on the importance of making healthy choices, caring for ourselves, and supporting one another.
On Friday, we celebrated students and classrooms during our Spotlight Leadership Ceremony, recognizing those who exemplify Habit 3: Put First Things First and Habit 4: Think Win-Win. Habit 3 reminds us to prioritize what matters most, take responsibility, and make choices that help us reach our goals. Habit 4 encourages us to look for solutions that benefit everyone, practice cooperation, and consider the needs of others. We are so proud of the students who were recognized for putting these habits into action and helping make Jones a place where everyone can learn, grow, and succeed!
We also had a special visit from our Area Superintendent Dr. Cazary, who presented our very own counselor, Mrs. Rebelo-Vu, with a San Diego Unified Love Note! This recognition was a wonderful way to celebrate the care, dedication, and positive impact she brings to our students and school community. Thank you Mrs. Noble for nominating her!
Looking ahead, there are still a couple of exciting opportunities to get involved:
- Julien's Pies for the Holidays: You can still order delicious Julien's pies, available fresh or frozen, to enjoy during the upcoming holiday season. Thank you for supporting our school through this fundraiser!
- Costume Parade: On Friday morning, right after the bell our classrooms will meet on the blacktop for a costume parade. Families are welcome to come on campus and watch the Parade! The Ofrenda in the counseling center (Room 12) will be open after the parade for any families who would like to check it out.
- Fall Festival Is Friday: We are looking forward to a fun-filled Fall Festival Friday evening! Please take a look at the flyer below for event details and opportunities to sign up to help or contribute. Whether you can volunteer your time or donate supplies, every bit of support makes a difference.
A very special thank-you to our incredible PTA for all the planning, organizing, and behind-the-scenes work that goes into making these events possible. Our Fall Festival and so many of the wonderful experiences our students enjoy would not happen without their leadership, dedication, and generosity. We appreciate you more than you know!

Highlights From Last Week...
Every reader is on a unique learning journey! During small-group instruction, teachers get to know students as readers, noticing their strengths, identifying areas for growth, and providing instruction that meets their individual needs.
In small groups, teachers identify the skills students are beginning to approximate and provide just the right amount of support to help them move forward.
Whether working on decoding, fluency, comprehension, or making meaning from text, students are supported in taking their next steps toward independence.
Reading growth is built through intentional practice and carefully increased challenges.
Some of the most important learning happens when teachers listen closely. As students read, teachers notice the strategies they use, the skills they are developing, and the places where they need additional support.
Each small success builds the foundation for the next, helping students move from what they can do with support to what they can do on their own.
The goal of small-group reading instruction is not simply to complete a book. It is to help students become thoughtful, confident, and independent readers.
Through targeted teaching, meaningful feedback, and opportunities to practice and apply new strategies, teachers help students transfer their learning to new texts and reading experiences.
By thoughtfully differentiating instruction, teachers ensure students are challenged at an appropriate level while building the skills and confidence they need to become stronger, more independent readers.
Our Student Council President and Vice President took the lead in hosting our Spotlight Leadership Ceremony!
Meet our Jones Student Council! Each of these student leaders introduced themselves and shared their role in helping make Jones an even better place to learn and grow.
This month, we recognized students who exemplify Habit 3: Put First Things First and Habit 4: Think Win-Win. From taking responsibility and prioritizing what matters to working together and finding solutions that benefit everyone, the students recognized show us what leadership looks like in action.
We were so proud to celebrate our counselor Mrs. Rebelo-Vu with a San Diego Unified Love Note, nominated by a parent.
Love Notes are a special recognition that shines a light on the amazing people who make a difference in the lives of our students and school community.
Mrs. Rebelo-Vu makes our school a better place and we could not be happier to see her recognized!

Spooky Season
Did you know that just 15 minutes of reading each day can make a world of difference in your child’s learning journey? Whether you are reading to your child, reading together, or listening to them read aloud, it all counts and it all matters!
Reading at home builds more than just literacy skills. It strengthens vocabulary, improves comprehension, and develops a lifelong love of learning. In fact, children who are read to daily are exposed to 1.4 million more words by the time they start school than children who are not. That kind of language exposure lays a strong foundation for both academic success and confident communication.
Just as importantly, books also help children grow socially by allowing them to step into other people’s experiences, see the world from different perspectives and practice empathy and kindness. Stories have the power to spark cultural awareness, build understanding and nurture the skills that help our students become not only successful learners, but also compassionate human beings.
Here are a few ways to make reading a special part of your routine:
Choose a cozy time and space to read together
Let your child pick the book (even if it’s the same one again!)
Ask questions about the story to boost comprehension
Model a love for reading by enjoying your own book nearby
The best part, your family has access to an endless amount of books through the internet and the Public Library. Looking for something new to read? Check out the links below for inspiration...
