Target 2021 Tutorial
FAQ (March 8, 2016)
Frequently Asked Questions
How will Site Leads, Instructors, and Student Support Coaches work in collaboration?
Academic Needs Assessment: The SSCs will provide the Site Leads with information regarding a Target 2021 student's academic needs according to the ILP and student achievement (CAAS). The SSCs will provide a list of students divided into the content based tutorial sessions. The Site Leads will provide that list of student names (based on the academic needs) to the instructors (tutors). The Site Lead will also provide the CAAS individual student reports to the SSCs and instructors.
Student Attendance: Site Leads and tutors will take attendance daily. Site Leads will upload the attendance into the Target 2021 Attendance folder. (SSCs will review attendance and make note of the student's participation in the ILP.) The tutors will share their bi-weekly attendance reports with the Site Leads and SSCs.Click here to access the PCG-EP instructor FAQ.

What is the instructor's (tutor's) role and responsibility?
APS has trained tutors on how to use our curriculum, materials, resources, and CAAS results to support the students. However, the lesson planning and delivery of instruction is the responsibility of the instructor as they work within the push-in or pull out model designed by PCG-EP.
Push-In Model (Model times can be adjusted.)
- 20 minutes of remediation (lesson/concept review/board time)
- 10 minutes checking for understanding
- 5 minutes of reflection
Pull-Out Model (Model times can be adjusted.)
- 10 minutes of warm up review of skill
- 20 minutes of remediation (lesson/concept review/board time/homework)
- 20 checking for understanding (short quiz, spot check)
- 5 minutes of reflection
To assist instructors, APS has provided training, materials, and resources so that PCG can meet the expectations as described below.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Target 2021 Tutorial Program?
Target 2021 Tutorial program is specifically designed to provide quality learning opportunities for students in grades 6-12 who may have been potentially impacted by the 2009 CRCT irregularities.
What is the difference between Target 2021 Tutoring and tutoring offered by the school?
My schools provide after-school tutoring led by teachers to help students who are having difficulty with homework and test-taking skills. Target 2021 provides an extra layer of support during the school day, afterschool, and/or on Saturdays to develop long-term skills and proficiency. Target 2021 Tutorial features an intense online learning environment with Individualized Direct Instruction. It utilizes both face-to-face instruction and a standards-based curriculum along with adaptive learning software (ALEKS & Reading Plus) to give students more structured guidance. Because Target 2021 uses both guided study and independent study lessons the curriculum works well for students needing remediation, enrichment, and academic support.
What is the difference between a push-in model and a pull-out model?
The push-in model requires the teacher and the tutor to work together in close collaboration. The goal is to ensure students are receiving academic support to the general education curriculum while limiting any disruption to their daily schedule. To implement this approach, Site Leads and SSCs will need to examine the students’ ILPs, course schedules, and student achievement data (progress reports, CAAS) to determine the push-in schedule and introduce the students to the tutors during a separate meeting. Site Leads work with teachers to determine when is the best time to push-in (opening, work period, or closing). This models help with adding an extra layer of personalized teaching without sacrificing class instruction time.
The pull-out model provides small group or individual instruction with the tutor in another setting outside of the classroom. Instruction will focus either on English Language Arts, Math, Science and/or Social Studies according to the student’s needs. In addition, when deemed necessary and appropriate, a student may be pulled out of advisory or connections/elective courses for assistance with completing missing assignments, homework, unit recovery, credit recovery, or other standards-based assignments that support academic learning in the classroom.
What is the difference between guided study and independent study?
Target 2021 Tutorial provides both guided study and independent study in support of remediation and enrichment. During the face-to-face tutoring sessions students receive guidance, encouragement, and personal attention from a professional tutor who plans and adapts the student learning. The tutors also create opportunities for students to continue their learning independently. Students use Reading Plus and ALEKS for independent study to develop literacy and mathematical skills. Both online programs are adaptive to the student’s ability and can be accessed anytime and anywhere.
Is Target 2021 Tutorial available for the remainder of the school year?
Yes. Target 2021 Tutorial Program will continue throughout the duration of this school year (May 21, 2016).
Will Target 2021 Tutors duplicate the APS curriculum?
Target 2021 Tutorial is designed to support and enhance what students learn in school, not replace it. Tutors use the APS curriculum for (ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
What curriculum resources are tutors using?
Tutors use district-adopted resources: Reading Plus, ALEKS, Defined Stem, Edgenuity, and USA Test Prep to support student learning and provide supplemental instruction.
How is Reading Plus used?
Tutors use Reading Plus blended-learning approach to help students gain proficiency by improving comprehension, reading rate, and vocabulary.
How is ALEKS used?
Tutors use ALEKS to help build the strengths and weaknesses of a student’s mathematical knowledge
How important is consistent participation?
According to best-practice research, there is a direct link between regular participation and success in extending learning programs. Regularly scheduled sessions must be a high priority. If students are not experiencing difficulty with homework or class lessons, they can receive skill building and enrichment through the Target 2021 Tutorial program. We expect that the greatest success will come from students who have a regular time to engage at least 90 minutes a week with guided and/or independent study.
