Superintendent's Weekly Update
9/23/2022
March 17, 2023
Due to a technical issue, some of our families did not receive last Friday's newsletter. Please find enclosed the Friday, March 17th update from Superintendent Wargo. Thank you!
Dear Weymouth Public Schools' Community,
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
This week over 300 Weymouth High School seniors participated in the 2023 Capstone Fair and proudly showcased their projects in front of their peers, caregivers, teachers, administrators, judges and the community.
The Capstone is a longstanding WPS tradition when WHS students work with an advisor on independent projects that synthesize their learning from electives in their career academy as well as their ability to apply 21st century skills in a real-world context.
Over the course of two nights we have the privilege of joining our students on their stage and watching our students shine as they describe in their words what they learned and why it matters.
As Superintendent, I could not be more proud of the students who displayed their hard work this week, and their families who supported them. Having had the opportunity to talk to many of you and learn about your passions is truly inspiring. Many of the topics up for review addressed challenges that your generation holds the power to influence, change and cure. I hope this project was a step in discovering the power you hold in impacting your future industries and contributing to your community.
Special thanks to the Capstone students, families, the community, judges, sponsors, WHS administrators, advisors, and Capstone Chair, Malissa Northup, for making the 2023 Capstone Fair a tremendous success.
Have a great weekend, and we'll see you on Monday, Wildcats!
Kind Regards,
Robert Wargo
Superintendent
What is the Capstone Project?
Students at Weymouth High School work with an advisor to complete an independent project which synthesizes their learning from the electives in their career academy as well as demonstrates command of core 21st century skills in a real-world context. As the Capstone is an independent student project, the form and focus will vary greatly, however, all students must adhere to the following guidelines:
1. Students will create a proposal of the project dealing with one of the themes in their career pathway;
2. Students will design and produce a rigorous project and portfolio, which includes:
works cited page of 15-20 sources used in the creation of the project
an annotated bibliography that includes 15-20 sources
a 4-5 page paper which synthesizes their research findings
evidence of using their research to make a difference in their industry or community
a 2-3 page reflective paper that identifies how the project demonstrates command of core 21st century skills;
3. Students will present to an audience consisting of teachers, administrators, parents, and community participants.
