Can you believe it's December already?

The time goes by so quickly, December is an exciting time for kids and staff, we have fun and engaging activities planned for kids. Also, keep in mind that students attendance and learning are very important and you should only keep kids home if they are not feeling well. Next, please set aside time to talk to your child(ren) about the importance of good classroom behavior and doing their very best to complete their work. Have a safe and restful winter-holiday break.

Lastly, I'm so excited to report that we will begin accepting applications for our School Safety Patrols (4th grade applicants only)

What all families should know about The Bus!

Hello Families,

Please remember that students must remain in their seats on the bus at all time, students can not hop seats or hang over the back of seats. This is to keep all kids safe during the bus ride. Students with great bus behavior can be rewarded with "Bus Tiger Tickets" and get a chance for their names to be entered for a prize.

Your Partners in Education,

Mrs. Bryant and Mrs. Banks

Hello Kindergarten Families!

We made it to December- yay!

At home this month, please work on sight words, cvc words, and writing simple sentences for reading. In math, please practice counting to 100 aloud as well as counting objects to 30.

With the cold weather upon us, make sure to send your child with cold weather gear as we will go outside if it isn't too cold. Make sure your child can put on coats, glove, etc.

Happy Holidays!

Happy December First Grade Families!

We hope that all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are looking forward to the Holiday season! We will be learning about "Holidays Around the World "in First Grade. We want the children to understand how different people around the world celebrate holidays in different ways. It is always a fun unit for the children!

This month we have a reading challenge for the children, instead of a Family Project. Each student is challenged to read 10 books at home. Once they have completed their list of 10 books, they should return their reading log sheet to school to earn their ticket to our Polar Express Day on December 23rd. The details and log sheet will come home on December 1st. All Aboard for some reading fun!

Please make sure that your children are dressed for the weather as we move into colder days! We do go outside daily for recess unless it is too wet or too cold! The children need the fresh air and to run off some energy!

Happy Holidays!

Happy December, Second Grade Families!

We hope that everyone had a relaxing time with family and friends for the Thanksgiving break. It's hard to believe that December is already here!

We will continue to further our Fact Strategies in math, we have started Opinion writing, we are continuing to work on retellings of a story, practicing our red words, and learning about the Leader In Me 7 Habits each month. Be on the lookout for our Family Tree Project this month.

The weather is starting to get cooler please make sure your child is dressed appropriately. We will go outside for recess unless it's under 20 degrees.

As always, continue to have your child read every night and go over your child's homework with them.

Educationally yours,

Your Second Grade Team

Mrs. Albulov, Ms. Carlin, and Mrs. Tibbs

Happy December 3rd grade families!

Thank you for attending parent/teacher conferences. We enjoyed discussing your child's strengths and areas for growth. Please continue to work with your child at home with their personal goals.

As the weather is changing, please make sure your child wears appropriate outerwear for outside recess.

Later this month we are excited to have a 'Winter Mixer' which will allow the third graders to visit all of the 3rd grade classes to participate in a variety of activities.

Please continue to monitor Dojo and check your child's daily communication folder for important papers and homework. And as always please remember to read with your child everyday (10 minutes listening to them, 10 minutes you reading to them, and monitor that they read for 10 minutes on their own).

Thank you for your continuous support!

Happy December 4th Grade Tigers!

This month extends much gratitude to all of our families!

Please help our team in supporting our students with constructive conversations centering on positive behavior, personal responsibility, perseverance for difficult tasks, and taking pride for accomplishing assignments and projects with scholarly work habits.

Please continue to encourage your child to complete daily homework and ask clarifying questions during class time. This month we continue to review academic goals and effective strategies to reach our goals. We are reflective learners and are always making adjustments to meet our individual needs in order to progress with optimal success. One way to help at home is to engage in conversations with your child about what he/she did really well in school for the day and what he/she still needs to improve in.

Most importantly, we wish all of our community members a blessed holiday season and treasure the special moments with family and friends.

Educationally yours,

Mrs. Ali, Ms. Dagenais, and Mrs. Gyulveszi

Special Education

The Importance of Mental Health

Encouraging good mental health is important for all children, but particularly when your child has special needs. Children need to develop the skills to understand and express their emotions from an early age. They need to develop strategies for coping with difficult situations, and ways of channeling energy appropriately.

Here are a few tips to help your child:

1. Acknowledge and label feelings: If your child cries, tell them you understand they are sad and back this up with any communication aids you are using.

2. Express emotions: Encourage people to express and release their emotions in ways that suit them – whether that’s through art, music, movement etc.

3. Develop skills: Support children to develop the skills to understand and express their emotions from an early age, using pictures, signs and other communication aids.

4. Channel energy: If people express their feelings in physically aggressive ways try to channel this energy appropriately – for example through sport or banging a drum.

5. Don’t discourage self-talk: Self-talk can often help a person with learning disabilities process their feelings effectively, so try not to discourage it.

6. Teach coping strategies: Teach strategies for coping with difficult situations, such as deep breathing, counting to 10 or down from 10.

7. Break card: Break cards are useful for allowing children or adults with special needs to leave a situation they find uncomfortable. They can use the card to tell people they want to leave.

8. Encourage friendships: Having friends and close social relationships is very important for people with learning disabilities. Loneliness is often a huge contributing factor to mental ill-health.

9. Worry box: Start a worry box with your child, especially if they have high anxiety levels. At the end of each day, talk about all the things they’re worrying about & encourage them to put them in the box. Every now and then open the box and talk about each worry, how your child is feeling and share some ways to handle the worry.

10. Redirect aggression: Try giving your child a punch bag or swing ball, so they can channel negative emotions in a safe way.

Coaches Corner

For December we are looking at part two of using magnetic letters at home.

1. Use the magnetic letter as a model and write out the letters on paper.

2. Make words with magnets, then write them out on paper.

3. Make a color word (like red) with magnetic letters, then draw items that color (apple, fire truck, etc.) and color them in.

4. Show children the numeral (like 6) then have them spell out the number word (six).

5. Put the magnet letters in a pile, draw out one, then have the child tell you what letter it is as they put it in the fridge.

6. Build several simple words and change out a letter to build new words (for example at, hat, sat, mat, cat).

7. Make rhyming pair words (bug-mug, fan-man, dog-log).

Best wishes!

Mrs. Karaba

Intervention helps our students READ!

The Holiday Season is here and so is the chilly weather!

As we know, the holiday season is packed full of things to do and people to see! This season, let's try some reading with a twist! Here are a few ideas to try at home: Change a story into a play with character roles, dress up as your favorite book character(s), create puppets and put on a play, design your favorite character using home supplies, create a diorama or scene using a shoebox, or change a story from a book to a comic or cartoon!

Whatever you choose to do, find a fun way to spend time reading with family and friends or just pull out some favorite books, snuggle up in a warm blanket, and get cozy reading!

Happy Holidays from

Listening Road Blocks Spacing Out: Pretend Listening: Your mind wanders when others talk. Pretend Listening: You don't really pay attention to the other person, but you pretend to. You say "yeah,", "uh-huh," and "cool." Selective Listening: You listen only to the parts that interest you.

Staying safe from COVID-19 Information... We all need to do our part to keep schools open to in-person learning

The mask mandate has been lifted and is now recommended but not mandatory.

Maintaining the health and safety of our school community is of utmost importance, particularly during this unprecedented pandemic situation. Providing a safe environment is a partnership between parents/guardians and the school district. VBPS has put into place many measures to keep our students and staff safe while they are in school. We ask that our parents and guardians help to prevent the spread of COVID, as well as other illnesses by:

  • Following the COVID-19 checklist guidelines
  • Reporting to the nurse if your child or any household member tests positive for COVID, or if they have an actual or suspected COVID exposure
  • Keeping your child home when they are sick,
  • Promptly picking your child up if they become sick at school

Please contact Nurse Dionisia Munoz with any questions or concerns related to COVID-19 or other health-related issues involving the school. dmunoz@vanburenschools.net

Students who are sick must not attend school. If a student presents to be sick when at school they will be sent home and provided instructions about the possible need to quarantine. We rely on our County Health Department to guide us accordingly.
