Superintendent Update

October 2026

Welcome back to school: Superintendent Update September 2026
SuperintendentUpdateOctober 2026

Good morning Lebanon School District Community,

The leaves are changing, the weather is cooling down, and the school year is in full swing. We are solidly into fall, and I hope you and your families are enjoying the season.

As I wrote in my last newsletter, we will spend this year highlighting the Lebanon School District Vision of a Learner, all of the ways our students embody this Vision, and how families and staff provide the support that makes it all possible. Over the next several months, we will take time to focus on each pillar of the Vision of a Learner separately.

For October and November, we will be recognizing students who are Responsible Local and Global Citizens!

A responsible citizen contributes positively to the community, treats others with respect, considers different perspectives, cares for the environment, and understands that individual choices can affect others. Citizenship can be demonstrated through significant acts of service, but it is also visible in everyday actions such as helping a neighbor, welcoming someone new, conserving resources, speaking up respectfully, or caring for a family member.

Throughout the month, we will be sharing more information on local volunteer and donation opportunities, a new Family Citizenship Challenge, and more! So, stay tuned for all of that, and please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.

In the meantime, you can start the conversation about responsible citizenship at home. Here are a few questions that might help prompt your discussion:

  • What does it mean to be a responsible member of our community?
  • What is one issue in our community that matters to our family?
  • How can we respectfully learn from people whose experiences differ from ours?
  • What is one action we could take together to help our community?
  • How do our everyday choices affect other people or the environment?

In partnership,

Amy Allen

Superintendent

A staff member at Lebanon High School sent us the following shoutout:

"Veronica Getchell (grade 12) is a model citizen! She is someone who dedicates herself to supporting others and making her community a better, more positive environment. Just a few of many examples: She is a leader of the Diversity and Inclusivity Club, the Leb to Leb reading group for younger grades, and last year co-founded the Walk as One Mental Health Walk, a joint effort with Hanover High School. Veronica was also elected to Student Council junior and senior year as the School Board student representative, which includes attending all School Board meetings to advocate for the student body and propose the initiatives Student Council strives to implement. In the local community, Veronica gives back through her role as a 3rd/4th grade basketball coach. As coach, she leads practice three days a week, attends every game, and helps with fundraising events. The 3rd/4th graders come to cheer her on at her Varsity games too! Veronica models dedication and commitment by showing up and helping to make these girls feel supported, important, and confident."

A Hanover Street School parent sent us this shoutout for Shannon Bender:

"I wanted to send a special thank you to Ms. Bender. My daughter had a rough start to her morning one day due to increased anxiety, and I ultimately had to drive her to school instead of having her take the bus as usual. When we arrived at school, the separation anxiety was still very present. Ms. Bender was so kind to come over, introduce herself, and help my daughter put down her backpack and play on the playground. It may not have seemed like much at the time, but it was exactly what she needed, and it made a difficult morning a little easier for both of us. I am incredibly grateful for teachers like Ms. Bender who take the time to show such kindness, patience, and compassion."

Another Hanover Street School parent sent in a shout-out for Amy Arnold!

"I’d like to commend Amy Arnold, 2nd grade at HSS, for her support of my daughter, whom she had last year. Amy went above and beyond to support her in the classroom and identified concerns we were unaware of. She then nominated my daughter to go to a Fisher Cats game for Most Improved Student and brought her family to the game to share in the experience with us. My daughter and Ms. Arnold even got to paint home plate!"

We are a few weeks into the school year and routines are settling into place. For some students and families, that also means new pressures start to surface — friendship challenges, school avoidance, or just the pace of everyday life feeling harder to manage.

When those signs start to show up, it can be helpful to get support early, rather than waiting until things feel more difficult. Cartwheel, our virtual mental health partner at LMS and LHS, is here for exactly these moments. Support includes:

  • Individual teletherapy for students — appointments with a licensed therapist, typically within days
  • Parent and caregiver guidance for navigating challenges at home
  • Family therapy for transitions, stress, or ongoing concerns
  • Psychiatric support, when appropriate
  • Care Programs for specific challenges like school avoidance, screens and social media, and intense emotions and behavior

Appointments are virtual, scheduling is flexible, and care is available in multiple languages. Students with Medicaid receive care at no cost, and most private insurance plans are accepted.

If you'd like to learn more, this interest form takes just a few minutes — someone from Cartwheel will follow up from there.
