MINGA Program Launching This Week at Sheridan Middle School

We’re excited to share that beginning this week, Sheridan Middle School will be launching MINGA—a positive behavior recognition system that encourages students to make great choices throughout the school day!

MINGA is already being used successfully at our high school, and we’re thrilled to bring it to our middle school community. Through this system, students will earn or lose points based on their behavior, with teachers awarding points for positive actions like effort, kindness, and hard work. Similarly, points may be deducted for behaviors that don’t align with our school expectations.

What makes MINGA even more powerful is that it keeps families in the loop! You’ll be notified when your student earns or loses points, giving you a clear window into their daily school experience.

As students accumulate points, they can redeem them for fun and meaningful incentives—like early lunch passes, eating outside with friends, or other school-based rewards.

We’re confident that MINGA will be a valuable tool in supporting a positive and engaging school environment for all students.

Military Families Military Families

At least annually, the Arkansas Council for Military Children holds a virtual or in-person public forum to receive feedback from Arkansas uniformed services families regarding the effectiveness of the provisions of Arkansas law pertaining to the children of military families.

The Council will hold its first forum of the 2025-26 academic year on October 2, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. This forum will be held virtually. The forum will begin with a brief presentation on resources available to support military families and then transition to time for military families to speak with Council members.

Self-Direct

This month, we’re challenging students to envision future goals and take intentional steps toward who they want to be. We are partnering with you to grow and develop your child’s ability to self-direct. We can model self-direction by celebrating the positive in each day, seeking the good in others, and emphasizing our responsibility to make positive choices.

October Map Activity - Foundations of Arkansas

Have you ever wondered what Arkansas was like hundreds of years ago? Before there were cities, highways, and smartphones, the land we now call the Natural State was home to thriving Native communities, whose descendants still live here and whose traditions continue to influence our state.

This lesson will take you back in time to visit the towering mounds built by ancient peoples, meet the Spanish and French explorers and traders who set up Arkansas’s first settlements, and see how our state went from a quiet territory to becoming the 25th state in the nation.

Along the way, you’ll explore maps, artifacts, and even places you can still visit today. Get ready—the first chapters of Arkansas’s story are full of adventure! (Virtual Arkansas AR250 Course)
