Egg Harbor Township High School Week of April 30, 2023

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Dear EHTHS Families,

As we head into the weekend, I want to take a moment to update you on some of the exciting things happening at EHTHS.

It's Week 3 of EHT Idol! Remember, everyone with an EHT account can vote, including teachers, and they must be logged in to access the form. Please CLICK HERE to vote.

On Tuesday night, the Visual Art Students at EHT High School got to experience what it was like to be professional artists at the 2023 Art Showcase. The support by the community and families of EHTHS was tremendous and the event was a huge success.

The PACE students attended a facility tour and presentation at Holtec International in Camden on Wednesday. Holtec International is a diversified energy technology company. The students had an opportunity to participate in a facility tour and a Q & A session with the HR Director. We are proud to have a 2022 graduate currently working and thriving at the company.

We are thrilled to announce that Grade 11 Girls State Alternate, Aanya Sandilya, is now a Delegate and will join her peers in June at Georgian Court University. Congratulations!

The Science classes have been busy this week. The CP Physics students had a grand time building Roller Coasters using 12 feet of insulation tubing. The project is the culmination and demonstration of their understanding of the Re-design process and concepts learned this year. The project concluded with a "Presentation Day" where the groups have the first 25 minutes of class to bring their vision to life, construction, theme and all, before they are judged. The AP Environmental Science classes also went on a field trip to the Nature Center in Cape May on May 3rd. The students participated in a seining activity, learned about horseshoe crabs, and presented their own projects related to resilience to flooding. The students then had time to explore the nature center and learn about snakes. The students then listened to a presentation from North Wildwood's mayor that discussed how beach erosion affects Wildwood. Finally, the students presented their own projects that they completed related to resilience to flooding and discussed their projects with students from Cape May Tech and Wildwood High School. This trip was in partnership with NJ Audubon Society.

Congratulations to our EHTHS Esports team for making it to the Garden State Esports League's Spring playoffs as the 23rd seed! They swept 10th seeded Paterson 3-0 in the first round, led by a strong performance from starters Dion Dominic Peralta and Omar Stephens. In round two next week, EHT will take on 7th seeded Cherokee. Best of luck on your competition!!

As we begin to wrap up the school year, please encourage your students to fulfill any obligation they may have (library books, athletic uniforms, lunch money). The end of the school year is only 32 school days away. Let’s finish strong!

Next week is Staff Appreciation Week. Please join us in celebrating our amazing staff.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Ms. Carugno

Culinary II & III

Culinary 2 and 3 students visited ACCC Academy of Culinary Arts on Tuesday April 18th. Students viewed a demonstration of cavatelli pasta by Chef Georgeann Leaming, an ACCC alum and Food Network Chopped champion. The chef worked with the students who joined in learning this special pasta rolling technique. In addition to marinara she also made a brown butter sauce, and everyone enjoyed a plate of delicious cavatelli. Students discussed the merits of attending the culinary program and had the opportunity to speak to graduates of the program. They also visited a baking class in session and interacted with baking instructor Chef Chelius.

AP Environmental

The AP Environmental Science classes went on a field to the Nature Center in Cape May on May 3rd. The students first participated in a seining activity where students went out into the bay in waders and pulled out organisms that the students identified once they were on land. The students then learned about horseshoe crabs and were able to hold a horseshoe crab. The students connected how organisms in aquatic environments may be affected by rising sea level. #DAY 1

The High School will be continuing with this bullying-prevention program for this school year!

#DAY1--a staff and student-led philosophy that will serve to foster a building-wide atmosphere of kindness and inclusion.

This program was started a few years ago in Bergen County by the Tyler Clementi Foundation and has gained momentum throughout the state and country for use in schools, community groups, workplaces, and sports teams.

The premise is simple: the adults in the building make a “declaration statement” about behavior that is expected, as well as behavior that is unacceptable, and we all pledge to conduct ourselves accordingly. This includes seeking help when we witness unacceptable behavior occurring.

This notion is called being an #Upstander

Student Assistance Program and Resources Student Assistance Program and Resources

April is National Alcohol Awareness Month!

Which means it's a good time to reflect on the role that alcohol plays in our lives.

Most adults in the United States who drink alcohol drink moderately and without complications. At the same time, alcohol-related problems are among the most significant public health issues in the country. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) affects about 15 million adults in the United States, and an estimated 88,000 people die from alcohol-related causes annually, making alcohol the third leading preventable cause of death in the nation.

According to the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 13.4 million people ages 12 to 20 reported that they have had at least one drink in their lives. This includes:

  • 6.4 million males ages 12 to 20
  • 7.0 million females ages 12 to 20
  • 144.0 million White people ages 12 and older
  • 23.8 million Black or African American people ages 12 and older
  • 1.4 million American Indian or Alaska Native people ages 12 and older
  • 10.0 million Asian people ages 12 and older
  • 4.1 million people of two or more races ages 12 and older
  • 35.2 million Hispanic or Latino people ages 12 and older
