Updated Calendar Alert

The calendar that was sent out in June 2026 did not contain the correct information approved by the 2025–26 LSLC. The calendar I have been posting in our electronic newsletter and sending home as part of the Parent Handbook is the correct and approved calendar.

Monday Morning Assembly Monday Morning Assembly

August 31, 2026

Please join us if you are able for our Monday Morning Assembly on the upper yard.

Last week we celebrated the reclassification of 1 student! Congratulations of David Trefecanty!

When students enter LAUSD and speak a language other than English, they are placed in the English Learner (EL) program to help them build strong skills in speaking, reading, and writing in English. Students can exit the program or be “reclassified” once they meet all the requirements.

In elementary school, this means:

1) scoring at Level 4 on the ELPAC test,

2) showing good progress in reading and writing on school assessments, i-Ready and SBAC,

3) and earning grades that demonstrate success in English-only classes.

Teachers also review each student’s performance, and parents are part of the decision process. Reclassification is an important milestone because it shows that the student has achieved proficiency in English and is ready to succeed in the regular academic program without additional language support. Do you have a student identified as an EL? Will they be next to reclassify?

School Site Council: Save the Date School Site Council: Save the Date

What is School Site Council?

The SSC is the decision-making council for all programs funded through the Consolidated Application (Con Ap). The SSC is responsible for the development of the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), in consultation with the English Learner Advisory Committee, other relevant stakeholders and, where applicable, the School Advisory Committee. The SSC is also responsible for meeting all school-level federal parental involvement mandates. Note that at Arroyo, we will not have an ELAC due to low EL numbers.

If you are interested in being part of SSC, you can complete the Self-Nominating Form and attend our Parent Elections on 9/10 at 3:30 p.m. https://forms.gle/cxqmFYBXrDkkubdQ7

RDRS Screener RDRS Screener

Reading Difficulties Risk Screener (RDRS)

In accordance with California Education Code Section 53008, all California schools are required to assess students from kindergarten to grade 2 for risk of potential reading difficulties using California Department of Education-approved screener.

To meet this requirement, LAUSD students will take an mCLASS© DIBELS© 8th Edition assessmentin English and/or mCLASS Lectura in Spanish once per year. The results will be used to identify students who may be at risk of potential reading difficulties and to provide intervention and support.

What do you need to know?

Arroyo will be administering this test to all kindergarten, first, second grade students during the week of October 5, 2026 - October 30, 2026. After administration, we will send you a report to share with you if your kindergarten, first, second grade child is at risk, or has low or no risk of reading difficulties. We will be inviting your to a parent workshop to understand your report and share ideas on how you can help or challenge your students at home while we do our part at school. There is an option for parents to opt students out of this test. If you would like to opt out, you must send a letter to your child's teacher that you do not what your child assessed with the RDRS. This letter is filed in your child's record and is only good for one school year. Letters must be received before testing administration.

The district is inviting parents to a webinar if you are interested in more information. Please review the flyer below.

Heat Advisory Heat Advisory

It's hot outside. Please ensure students bring a light sweater in their backpacks as sometimes the air indoor gets really cold. If you are not already, pack a reusable bottle as we do have a refilling station both downstairs across from the restroom and upstairs by the middle school restrooms. We also have water fountains in the classrooms and all around campus.

PTA Corner PTA Corner

ASMSM PTA will have pizza, snacks, and drinks for sale from 4-6pm on during Back to School Night, but we still need your help to make it happen!

Volunteer on Monday, 8/31 - We'd love two more volunteers from 5-6 pm during the middle school event to help with pizza, drinks, and snacks!

Volunteer on Wednesday, 9/2 - We need four volunteers from 4-5 pm and four volunteers from 5-6 pm during the elementary school event in order to offer concession sales. This is a great job for middle school students or older siblings who need high school service hours!

Thanks for your support, Cougars 💙💛
