Cindy Schmidt
MS/HS Principal
Welcome LaRae Ludwig as the new Dean of Students
As we prepare to begin a new school year, I am excited to step into my new role as Dean of Students at LS-H Middle/High School. This year marks my 29th year as an educator in the district, and it is the incredible students, families, and staff who have made LS-H such a wonderful place to call home. I am grateful to continue serving our school community in this new capacity.
As Dean of Students, my goal is to help create a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment where every student can learn, grow, and feel connected. I look forward to partnering with students and families as we navigate the challenges and celebrate the successes of middle and high school. Our district's mission is to prepare students to contribute and succeed in life, or as we often say in our family, our goal is to raise productive, kind, and responsible adults.
For those who don't know me yet, my husband and I have two sons. Our oldest recently graduated from college, and our youngest will be a senior in high school this year. We also have a yellow lab named Ginger. When I'm not at school, you'll usually find me reading (I suppose that's expected from an English teacher!), baking, or spending time with my family.
Whether we've known each other for years or are just getting acquainted, please don't hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns. I look forward to working together to make this a wonderful year for our students.
Go Giants!
OPEN HOUSE
Open House - August 20-21, 2026
To provide more accessibility, Open House will be held at two separate times for the Middle and High School:
- Thursday, August 20: 3:00-7:30 PM
- 5:30: 6th grade Orientation: Auditorium
- 6:30: Parent Presentation Teen Mental Health First Aid
- Friday, August 21: 8:00-11:30 AM
Teachers, counselors, and office staff will be available at each Open House to answer any questions you might have as we prepare for the school year.
This is a great opportunity for students and parents to meet teachers, explore the school, practice opening lockers, and prepare for the 1st day of school.
NEW: "Away for the Day" Personal Device Policy
This school year, Le Sueur-Henderson Middle and High School will implement an "Away for the Day" personal device policy.
Students in grades 6-12 are expected to **turn off and store all personal electronic devices—including cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, and other wearable technology—in their locker (or leave them at home) from 8:10 a.m. until 3:08 p.m. This expectation applies throughout the entire school day, including passing time and lunch.
The goal of this policy is to reduce distractions, improve student focus, strengthen face-to-face interactions, and create the best possible learning environment for all students.
Students who violate the policy will face progressive consequences, including parent pickup of the device and additional disciplinary actions for repeated violations. Refusal to surrender a device to a staff member may result in suspension. Exceptions will be made for documented medical needs, IEPs/504 Plans, emergencies, or when a staff member has granted permission for instructional purposes.
We appreciate our families' partnership as we work together to ensure students are fully present, engaged, and ready to learn each day.

Parent-Student Handbook Acknowledgment & Agreement Form
Welcome to another exciting school year at Le Sueur-Henderson! To ensure a safe, supportive, and successful learning environment for everyone, we require all students and their parents/guardians to review the Le Sueur-Henderson Parent-Student Handbook.
The handbook outlines our academic expectations, code of conduct, attendance policies, technology use guidelines, and extracurricular activities rules.
Vaccination Reminder
According to Minnesota State Law (MN Statute 121A.15) it is required that all students be vaccinated against certain communicable diseases prior to enrolling in school. Proof of vaccination or a signed and notarized conscientious objection or medical exemption form must be on file with the school prior to the first day of classes or the student will be at risk for exclusion from school. If you are new to the Le Sueur-Henderson School district, please check to ensure that we have the correct immunizations on file for your student(s).
Parking Permits
All student parking is located in the South and West parking lots. Students are required to enter the building through the main doors.
Student parking will not be assigned and will be on a first come, first choice basis each day. Students will need to complete a parking permit registration form and submit payment to the Le Sueur-Henderson High School office. This can be done beginning on the third Monday in August. The cost for a parking pass will be determined by the following dates of purchase and be valid through the school year:
- Permits purchased between Aug 17 - Oct 29, 2026:..............$70.00

NEW: Middle School Chromebook Use
New this year, middle school students will have access to a Chromebook during class time to support instruction and classroom activities. Devices will stay at school and will not be sent home.
Why we're doing this:
- Wellbeing: Limiting screen time to the school day supports healthier routines at home, more sleep, and more time for family and in-person connection.
- Online safety: Our devices are filtered and monitored during school hours. Keeping them on campus reduces unsupervised access to social media and lowers the risk of cyberbullying outside of school.
- Device care: Keeping Chromebooks at school allows our IT team to charge, store, and maintain them properly, so more devices stay in good working condition for learning.
- Purposeful use: Teachers plan Chromebook-based classwork and activities with thoughtful consideration of purpose, completion time, and effectiveness.
What this means for you:
- Students won't need to charge or transport a Chromebook.
- If needed, homework requiring a computer can be done at the library, before/after-school access at school, or lunch time.
- Students who have outstanding classwork that requires a Chromebook to finish, are expected to work with their teacher to arrange a plan and time to complete it.
We appreciate your partnership in keeping the school day focused and safe.
Standards-Based Grading Comes to LSH Middle School
This year, the Middle School is transitioning to Standards-Based Grading (SBG) for all students.
Rather than averaging assignments into a single letter grade, SBG measures how well your child is progressing toward mastery of specific learning standards in each subject, giving you a clearer, more accurate picture of their strengths and the areas where they may need extra support.
Report cards will show a proficiency score of 4, 3, 2, or 1 for each standard:
- 4 means the student is exceeding grade-level expectations
- 3 means the student has met grade-level expectations
- 2 means the student is approaching grade-level expectations
- 1 means the student is beginning to work toward grade-level expectations.
You can view the full Proficiency Scales, which describe in detail what each score looks like for every subject and grade level, by visiting https://hsms.isd2397.org/o/lhmhs. We encourage families to take a few minutes to explore these scales together with your student so everyone has a shared understanding of what success looks like this year. As always, please reach out to your child's teachers or our office with any questions as we roll out this new approach to grading.
School Transportation Information 2026-2027
School Picture Information
School pictures will be taken Tuesday, August 25th during school hours.
District Website
Our district website (www.isd2397.org) is a great communication tool for all of our students, parents, staff and community members. Important dates for school activities and athletics as well as announcements and staff communication information are a few items which can be found on the school website.
Daily Schedule
Students at LS-H Middle School will attend seven classes each day and each class will be 48 minutes in length.
Learning Lab
Students identified as needing extra support for Reading and/or Math skills may be assigned to Learning Lab where intense intervention skills will be taught and practiced on a 6 week rotation.
POWER Lounge
The POWER Lounge is a dedicated space in our school designed to support students in various ways. POWER stands for Pride, Ownership, Willingness, Empathy, and Respect—the core values we strive to uphold in our community. The POWER Lounge provides a safe and supportive environment where students can de-escalate from stressful situations, reflect on their actions, and relearn appropriate behaviors. It also offers a haven for social-emotional support, helping students navigate their personal and academic challenges with the guidance of trained staff. Our goal is to foster a positive school experience by encouraging students to take ownership of their actions, demonstrate willingness to improve, show empathy towards others, and maintain respect in all interactions.
Medication Policy
The Le Sueur - Henderson Public Schools medication procedure does not allow students to self-carry over the counter medications (OTCs). This applies to students of all ages and includes basic pain relievers such as Tylenol and/or Ibuprofen. This does not apply to rescue medications, such as Inhalers or EpiPens.
For MS/HS students and parents, please be aware that our Annual Health form allows for you to provide consent for basic OTCs. Please recognize that this requirement is to help ensure the safety and health of our students. We thank you in advance for partnering with us and making sure this is a safe place for students to learn and grow.
Attendance Matters
Every minute of a student's time at school is important. Students who are absent miss valuable instructional time. However, students who are ill should stay home, rest, and recover.
We recognize these messages can feel at odds with one another. We hope to underscore that keeping students in school when they’re healthy allows flexibility and time, if needed, to be absent and fully recover from illness before returning to school.
It is important that families continue to report their child’s excused absences, so school officials know when to expect students in class. However, the state tallies any absence – excused or unexcused – toward overall absenteeism. A student is considered chronically absent when 10% (18 days) or more of the school year are missed. Therefore, when a student is absent for any reason, certain actions are triggered as follows:
Unexcused absences
- At the 3rd unexcused absence, a letter will be sent home from the school
- At the 5th unexcused absence, a letter will be sent home from the school
- At the 7th unexcused absence, a meeting will be held to draft an attendance plan for the student and attendance assistance will be offered by Le Sueur County
🚩An absence consists of one or more class periods on seven (7) school days per school year if the child is in middle school, junior high school, or high school.
Excused absences will also be monitored
- Schools may send letters home, call families, and/or coordinate meetings with families to review student absence rates.
- Students accumulating 7 Excused absences in a semester will be asked to provide medical verification of any subsequent absences to be considered excused.
Important Attendance information
A habitual truant is a child who is at least twelve (12) years old and less than eighteen (18) years old who is absent from attendance at school without lawful excuse for one or more class periods on seven (7) school days per school year if the child is in middle school, junior high school, or high school, or a child who is seventeen (17) years of age who is absent from attendance at school without lawful excuse for one (1) or more class periods on seven (7) school days per school year and who has not lawfully withdrawn from school under Minnesota Statutes, section 120A.22, subdivision 8.
Pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, section 260C.163, subdivision 11, habitual truant also means a child under age twelve (12) who has been absent from school for seven (7) school days without lawful excuse, based on a showing by clear and convincing evidence that the child's absence is not due to the failure of the child's parent, guardian, or custodian to comply with compulsory instruction laws.
A school district attendance officer shall refer a habitual truant child and the child’s parent or legal guardian to appropriate services and procedures, under Minnesota Statutes, chapter 260A.
