Principal's Update
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
KNOW YOUR NUMBERS
Quarter 1 is almost in the books! But before you close the chapter, here's a question: Do you actually know how your grades are calculated? Checking Skyward is a good start, but understanding why you have a particular grade is even more important. A missing assignment, a low test score, or a heavily weighted category can make a bigger difference than you might realize.
There's a well-known saying, attributed to management expert Peter Drucker who said "What gets measured gets managed." In other words, when you pay attention to something, you're better equipped to do something about it. That's a pretty good way to think about your grades. It's more than a report card. It's information you can use. Which assignments are missing? Which categories carry the most weight? Knowing where you stand helps you make smarter decisions about what to do next.
At PHHS, we talk about THINK-COMMUNICATE-ACT, and this is a perfect example. THINK about what your grades are telling you. COMMUNICATE with your teachers when you have questions. ACT on what you can still improve. Taking ownership doesn't mean having perfect grades. It means knowing where you stand and what to do next.
TAKE THE CHALLENGE
Students:
Look at your missing assignments, category weights, and recent scores. For grades that need to be improved identify one specific action you can take before the quarter ends that will make the biggest impact on your grade.
Parents & Guardians:
Ask your student to show you how one of their grades is calculated. Instead of focusing only on the percentage, ask, "What is this grade telling you, and what's your next step?"
