21-Day Challenge

Challenge Accepted!

The 21 Day Challenge (Healthy eating challenge), is upon us! Your child will be given a sticker to take home next week to remind you to register.

The Registration period is September 28th through October 5th. The Challenge starts on Sept 22-Oct 12. The primary purpose is for our own elementary students to create healthy snack options and commit to healthier “snacking” for this 21-day period in hopes that will create habits of healthier eating for life. You can find healthy choices at the above “healthy snack options” link. You can also find past and present recipe books by clicking here.

The 21-Day Challenge begins on October 5th, but please register online before it kicks off!!

Here are the steps to have your child participate:

Dates:

  • September 22nd- October 12th is CHALLENGE TIME
  • November 9th-November 16th is when parents must complete the survey with the student in order to get their reward.

Step 1: Register your elementary child for the challenge at www.kids-teaching-kids.com (Please remember to save your assigned number with each enrollment)

Step 2: Each day beginning October 5th, create a healthy snack from either healthy snack finder, participating restaurant, or recipe book. Your child can post pics of their favorite healthy snack at twitter #ktk21day or #FISDMadeToShine @RogersFrisco

Step 3: Complete Final Assessment (this will be emailed to you following the challenge)

Let's be Super Snackers together!

5th Grade CogAT TESTING

On Tuesday, September 27th Rogers’ Fifth Graders will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). The test will be given over 1 day for approximately 2.5 hours (this time includes breaks).

Please schedule morning appointments on days other than CogAT testing. The CogAT test gives teachers and parents a snapshot of students’ higher level thinking, reasoning, and problem solving abilities (verbal, nonverbal, quantitative, and overall ability), as compared to other fifth graders in the nation. It is a local assessment and is not needed for promotion to 6th grade.

Please be sure your fifth grader has a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast on this day. Please encourage your child with a hug, a reminder to listen carefully the first time, and to do their “Personal Best” on the test

Set an Appointment with the Counselor?

Please use this LINK if you would like me to speak with your child. Or, you can encourage your child to let me know if they need to speak with me. Their teacher has a form they can fill out and has access to the same link. **This form will ask for your child’s ID number, but it is NOT a required field. You can leave it blank.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR --- UNITY DAY at ROGERS

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. On Wednesday, October 19th, Rogers staff and students are encouraged to wear ORANGE to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message to show that no child should ever experience bullying.

OCTOBER’S CHARACTER TRAIT SELF-CONTROL

Why does self-control matter?

Sometimes, what makes you happy right now isn’t good for you in the long run. For instance, junk food tastes great but isn’t healthy. Self-control powerfully predicts academic and professional achievement, physical and emotional well-being, positive social relationships, and financial security.

How do I encourage self-control in others?

Model it. Resolve to accomplish a goal of personal significance, then talk about obstacles and your plans to overcome them. Emphasize strategies you’ve found work especially well for you: “I’m not super motivated to exercise, but I now take the stairs instead of the elevator—that’s a start!”

Celebrate it. Praise children for waiting patiently. Notice when they plan ahead: “Great job getting all your stuff organized!” Appreciate ingenuity in navigating self-control dilemmas: “Keeping your cell phone in a different room is such a clever idea!”

Enable it. Establish family rules, like no cell phones at mealtimes. Create quiet, distraction-free areas for study and work. Keep fruit on the kitchen counter and hide junk food on a high shelf.

Need Outside Counseling Resources?

Please email Sera Bocian at bocians@friscoisd.org to get a list of counselors in the community. There are therapists for eating disorders, LGBTQ+, low cost, bilingual, crisis, substance abuse, special needs, etc.

FISD Achieve Mentoring Program

If you have a child who may benefit from a menor, please contact Sera Bocian at bocians@friscoisd.org.

Achieve mentors are trained to empower at-risk students to develop greater capacity and skill to build and maintain positive relationships, set goals, make responsible decisions and connect within the community. Achieve mentors equip students to be future ready with FISD Character Strength Curriculum, while supporting the development of the whole child. By acting with integrity and empathy, mentors are a consistent and positive relationship source that empowers students to create connections within the school community and access to wraparound support services.

The FISD Achieve Mentoring program unites caring and committed adults from across the community to provide student support, inspire future success in school and life, and to elevate students beyond any limitation.

If you would like more information or if you would like to be a mentor, please see the Frisco Guidance & Counseling Website.

FREE Resources

Frisco ISD has many wonderful resources for families who might benefit from extra services and support. We offer free or reduced lunch/breakfast for your child, and we have organizations that can help if your child needs food at home, clothing, hygiene items, or school supplies. Each organization has a sign-up process, and I would be HAPPY to help you with this process if need be. Here is a link to my website where you can find information about these resources. Or you can email me at bocians@friscoisd.org.
