Fall Screening Begins This Week! Fall Screening Begins This Week!

zoom_out_map

Dear BES Families,

This is a big week at BES - we will begin our fall screening. What does this mean? BES uses the MTSS (multi-tiered system of supports) to identify each individual student's needs academically and behaviorally. We give our students academic screenings in reading and math. From there, grade level teams and our instructional support staff meet to review the data and ensure students are given interventions at their learning level and are placed in intervention tiers: Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3. See the graphic for a description of each tier. Every student is provided with at least 30 minutes of reading and math intervention for 4-5 days a week. Students in tier 2 or 3 are also progress monitored to ensure they are improving with the current intervention. Behaviorally, the teachers will assess your children based on what they have observed since the beginning of the school year. This is typically done the second week of September, so the teachers can really get to know the students before completing it. This looks at social behaviors - how they get along with others; academic behaviors - how they approach learning, and emotional - how do they seem to feel and what emotions do they show throughout their day. The studens also have the ability to rate themselves and more information will come, including parental permission, prior to that survey.

This method has proven results. Yes, it helps us to find and support students who have missing skills or need a little extra time to learn. However, it also helps us to find and support students who are achieving above their grade levels. All our students need support to continue their love of learning!

There is so much that goes into our academic support sytesm and we will be hosting a parent information night in mid-September. We hope you will join us to learn more!

How are those donations coming? In the past, I have been known to dye my hair WILDCAT purple if we are able to hit the $10,000 mark!! The kids love that and I even had some join me! Here's repeated information from last week about Glow Bash:

GLOW BASH: This is our big fundraiser of the year for the school. The money is used for all things fun! If we do cupcakes on KS Day, Chiefs Super Bowl party, or when we go on field trips, it is all paid from our Glow Bash donations. We ask students collect donations from friends and family. Those donations can be turned in by September 7th. Our event is for the whole family! We will gather at the stadium at 7pm on Saturday, September 7th. The music will be going and students can get a piece of glow accessory for each lap around the track they do. They do not have to walk the track all night though...they can play yard games throughout the stadium, play on the field, dance, visit the food trucks, get more glow gear at the glow store, and just hang with friends! It's really a fun night and I hope you can join us, and bring friends. It's a free event and even if your child does not have any donations to bring, we want you to still come to the Glow Bash!

Don't forget, our PTO is sponsoring Popsicles on the Playground this Tuesday! Check out the information below and I'll see you there!

Have a great week,

Cindy Apple, Principal

Weather Aware: Heat This Week! Weather Aware: Heat This Week!

We will be watching the heat and heat index this week. All outdoor activities like PE and recess will be outdoors during cool hours of the day, be shortened if held outside, or we will be indoors. Please send a water bottle with your students so they can hydrate during the day. We typically do not allow students to carry water bottles outside of the classroom, but it will be allowed during the days of high heat this week. Please talk to your children about the signs of heat exhaustion and use caution this week.

Stay Cool, Wildcats!

Pedestrian Crosswalk at 68 Highway and Aquatic Drive Pedestrian Crosswalk at 68 Highway and Aquatic Drive

As you have probably seen, there is a new pedestrian crosswalk and beacon being installed at 68 Highway and Aquatic Drive. It will be a similar beacon and crosswalk that is in place on South Metcalf, by Ron Weers Park. There have been some installation delays so it will not be installed when school begins. We will have a school staff member out at the crosswalk and the city is working on some temporary signage. The hope is to have the crosswalk fully functional by the end of August.

We urge extreme caution at this crosswalk until it is fully functional.

Attendance and School Calendars Attendance and School Calendars

Please take note of our school calendars when planning your family's vacations.

Attendance is a focus at BES and we want your children at school! It can be very difficult for students to get caught up sometimes when they miss for extended periods of time. For example, when a student misses a week of school, that is up to 450 minutes of math instruction they are missing!

If your family does have a trip planned, we do not provide lessons or materials ahead of those trips. Teachers will work with you to schedule times when your student can be given that instruction and guided work time to ensure mastery of skills. This may have to happen before or after school, but we will also try to work during the school day as well.

GREAT school habits now help prepare students for future success!
