Welcome Back – Set the Tone for a Healthy School Year

As we kick off a new school year, it’s the perfect time to think about the choices that shape who you are. Middle school is a time to try new activities, build friendships, and explore your interests — all without the pressure to “fit in” by doing things that don’t match your goals. One of the biggest myths students face, is the idea that drinking alcohol makes someone cool. But the truth? Most middle schoolers don’t drink, and being confident in your choices is what truly makes you stand out.

There are so many ways to feel good about yourself and have fun without risking your health. Whether it's joining a school club, playing sports, making music, gaming, or volunteering, choosing healthy activities is a powerful way to show leadership. What makes you cool is being true to yourself, setting goals, and finding what brings you joy.

Let’s make this year about supporting each other, trying new things, and staying true to who we are.

Monthly Fast Facts

  • Most middle schoolers don’t drink alcohol. According to the 2024 Illinois Youth Survey, 95% of 8th graders in Highland Park and Deerfield reported NOT using alcohol in the past month. Knowing this can help resist peer pressure. (Illinois Youth Survey 2024)
  • Alcohol can harm your growing brain. The brain continues developing into your mid-20s. Drinking before age 15 increases the risk of developing alcohol use disorder later in life. (SAMHSA, Underage Drinking)
  • Choosing healthy activities builds real confidence. Teens who participate in extracurricular activities are more likely to feel connected to school and less likely to engage in risky behaviors. (CDC, Adolescent Health)
