As March unfolds and we say goodbye to another trimester, it's an important time in your academic journey—a chance to reflect on your achievements and start thinking about what comes next.

For our seniors, you'll be making big decisions for your future, like exploring college options or thinking about different career paths. You may be in the midst of deciding which college you want to attend, researching schools and scholarships, writing essays, and gathering recommendation letters. Or, you may be creating your first resume and cover letters, preparing for your first job interview. Or, you may be dedicating your focus on the steady steps towards graduation, working hard in your classes and eager to discover what awaits you after you receive your high school diploma. It's a busy time, but also an exciting one as you take the first steps toward life after high school.

And, you're not alone in this journey.

Your college and career counseling team is here to support you every step of the way. Whether you need help with college applications, career advice, or just someone to talk to, we're here for you.

So as you navigate this exciting time, remember to stay curious, open-minded, and excited about the possibilities ahead. Your future is full of promise, and we can't wait to see where it takes you.

2024-25 FAFSA UPDATE 2024-25 FAFSA UPDATE

On Jan. 30, the U.S. Dept of Ed (US DOE) announced that colleges and universities will receive 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) applicant data beginning in the first half of March.

We anticipate that the Minnesota Dream Act Application will be available by mid-February 2024. The filing deadline of the Dream Act aligns with FAFSA, June 30.

Students should still complete the FAFSA or Minnesota Dream Act as soon as possible. Use these tips to successfully complete your FAFSA form.

There continue to be issues for populations of students who are unable to file the 2024-2025 FAFSA. Contributors without a Social Security Number cannot access or complete the FAFSA.

The Federal Student Aid Information Center’s number is 1-800-433-3243 (1-800-4-FED AID) has extended service hours for January through April; M-F 7a-9p, Sat 10a-4p. Additionally, Minnesota Office of Higher Education Financial Aid staff can help answer questions about the application or process. The number to call is 651-642-0567. Select option 2. The line is answered Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm.

DECODING COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID OFFERS DECODING COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID OFFERS

After completing the FAFSA, you will receive a financial aid award letter from the colleges to which you have been accepted. Financial aid award letters can be confusing. So how do you figure out what college will actually cost?

Nitro suggests considering these 4 components:

  1. Yearly costs, such as tuition, fees, books, room and board, travel, etc

  2. Financial aid that you don’t have to pay back (scholarships, grants, work-study)*

  3. Financial aid you DO need to pay back (federal loans)

  4. What’s left after accounting for the above 3 items? That is the amount you will need to pay out of pocket.

*Please note that some grants and scholarships are not offered every year. Also, work-study is not a guarantee.

Check out their article at the link below for in-depth examples of how to decode your financial aid award letter and gain a clearer understanding of how much college will cost!

Now is the time to sign up for PSEO for the fall of 2024-2025 school year! Here's what you need to know:

PSEO is an excellent opportunity for high school students to earn college credits while still in high school. Here's how it works:

  • College Courses: PSEO allows you to take college-level courses at a local college or university, either on campus or online.

  • High School Credit: The credits you earn also count towards your high school graduation requirements. It's a way to simultaneously progress in your high school curriculum and get a head start on college coursework.

  • Cost-Free or Reduced Cost: In many cases, the tuition for PSEO courses is covered by the state or school district. This means you can potentially save money on future college expenses.

  • Explore Interests: PSEO is an opportunity to explore specific academic interests, challenge yourself with more advanced coursework, and experience the expectations of college-level classes.

If you are interested in PSEO, email Cheri Chandler Smith at chandlersmithc@district279.org to set up a meeting. Stay tuned for more information.
