The Sullivan boys’ tennis team has strung together an exciting series of matches, showing resilience and depth across the lineup. Over the past week, the Golden Arrows went 4–1, notching key victories over Greencastle, Parke Heritage, South Putnam, and Terre Haute South while falling only to a tough Terre Haute North squad.

Loss to Terre Haute North (4–1)

Sullivan opened the stretch on August 21 against perennial powerhouse Terre Haute North, dropping the match 4–1. Sam Couch earned the lone point at #3 singles with a strong 6-3, 6-2 win. Despite the loss, Coach Wes Kirk praised the team’s competitive effort, highlighting the doubles teams’ close battles and Couch’s standout performance.

Doubleheader Sweep: Greencastle (5–0) and Parke Heritage (3–2)

On August 23, Sullivan bounced back in impressive fashion, sweeping Greencastle 5–0 before edging Parke Heritage 3–2. Against Greencastle, the Arrows dominated every court, with Hunter Pinkston, Carter Mischler, and Couch sweeping singles and both doubles teams cruising to victories. Junior varsity also contributed with a 3–1 win. Later that day, Sullivan secured a tight 3–2 win over Parke Heritage. Pinkston and Couch again took care of business in singles, while the doubles team of Zane Abbott and Easton Monroe clinched the deciding point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Coach Kirk emphasized the importance of team depth in pulling out both wins.

Conference Win at South Putnam (5–0)

Sullivan kept rolling on August 25 with a commanding 5–0 victory at South Putnam, marking the team’s first conference win. Pinkston, Mischler, and Couch swept singles, while the doubles duos of Spencer Hanks/Jaxon Zollman and Tanner Boyll/Carter Lee dominated their matches without dropping a game. It was the first varsity win for Boyll and Lee, and Coach Kirk noted their potential for future contributions.

Road Win Over Terre Haute South (3–2)

The most dramatic result came August 26, when Sullivan edged Terre Haute South 3–2 on the road. Pinkston’s smart play at #1 singles and Couch’s gritty three-set win at #3 singles set the stage, while Hanks and Zollman delivered a clutch victory at #1 doubles to seal the team win. Couch, now 8–0 on the season, earned the game ball after battling through a fall and a second-set loss to deliver the deciding point. Coach Kirk praised his leadership and preparation, noting that his undefeated record includes big wins over Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South, and Gibson Southern.

Season Outlook

With these results, Sullivan stands at 6–2 overall and 1–0 in conference play, positioning themselves as a dangerous team heading into the heart of their schedule. Coach Kirk highlighted the growth of younger players and the consistency of veterans like Couch and Pinkston as key factors in the team’s success.

The Golden Arrows opened their football season in dominating fashion with a 42–7 victory over North Knox, highlighted by the return of senior quarterback Blake Fraker. After missing most of last year with a broken collarbone, Fraker showed no signs of rust—completing 8 of 10 passes for 188 yards and four touchdowns.

Three of those scores went to senior standout Zane Catlin, who also contributed on defense with two of Sullivan’s four interceptions and added a rushing touchdown. Running back Clark French provided balance on the ground, leading all rushers with 124 yards on 14 carries.

The Arrows’ defense made its mark early, forcing turnovers and keeping the Warriors in check after their lone first-quarter touchdown. From there, Sullivan controlled the game on both sides of the ball.

Next up, the Golden Arrows travel to South Vermillion for the annual Battle of the Bronze Helmet.
