UPDATE: RHS Boosters Christmas & Wreath Sale. Due to the forecasted weather for Saturday, the Boosters Christmas Tree and Wreath sale will ONLY BE HELD ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4th from 8am to 6pm.

This Saturday and Sunday (December 3rd & 4th), the historic Old Colony House on Newport's Washington Square will be transformed into a future-focused exploration of possibilities for the Pell Bridge, experienced through the magic of Virtual Reality (VR). Bike Newport and RISD have teamed up to present Crossing the Pell, a free community experience for every member of the family to enjoy, using cutting-edge technology to explore inspiring designs by RISD architecture students.

Visitors will pedal through four student design concepts on stationary bikes that respond to the riders’ movements, while a VR headset shows a structure that has been utterly transformed to feature people-powered access. Wander your way through stunning visions for adding a suspended lower level to the bridge that would allow for pedestrians and cyclists as well as arts venues, parks, cafes and even a floating fish market. Visitor feedback will help inform efforts to achieve biking and walking access for the bridge, and feedback from children and adults will be equally welcome.

This free and family-friendly installation will be open to the public at the Old Colony House on Newport’s Washington Square on Saturday, December 3 from 10 am–5 pm and on Sunday, December 4 from 10 am–3 pm. Pre-registration for specified arrival times is encouraged, but not required. Arrival times are spaced 30 minutes apart, though stay as long as you wish. All ages are welcome. “Putting on the headsets to walk or bike brings the students’ inspiring ideas and designs into our real space,” says Bari Freeman of Bike Newport. “It’s an incredible experience that we want everyone to access. There’s lots of buzz about how to get bike and pedestrian access onto the Pell Bridge and [... ] we’re bringing it to Newport so everyone has the chance to try it and talk about it.”

ROGERS HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS: Would you like to explore your career interests, build professional skills and get paid $15/ hour? The PrepareRI Internship Application is live and open to high school juniors for summer 2023!

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
The PrepareRI High School Internship Program is a rigorous 7-week work-based learning experience where current Rhode Island public high school juniors are placed in a paid summer internship during the summer of 2023. We are looking for high school students who are highly motivated to learn and want to explore the world of work. Students selected into the program will make $15.00/hour, and can earn up to $4,200 for the summer.

INTERNSHIP ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

• Current junior in high school (2022/2023 school year)
• Parental/Guardian consent to participate
• Minimum of 16 years of age by March 1, 2023
• Complete online PrepareRI High School Internship Application
• Complete interview with SkillsRI and with employer(s)
• Attend 40-hour paid work-readiness bootcamp scheduled for June 26 – June 30, 2023 from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
• Complete a minimum of 175 hours of work over a 6-week period between July 10 - August 18, 2023
• Have a flexible schedule for work during the summer of 2023
• Eligible to work in the United States
