Reading Department Receives Exemplary Award from ILA!
Big congrats are in order to HF's Reading Department on receiving the Exemplary Reading Program Award by the International Literacy Association (ILA)! The award recognizes outstanding reading and language arts programs across the U.S. and Canada--HF is one of only two schools to receive this year's award.
“The Exemplary Reading Program Award honors those who go above and beyond in fostering a love of reading, critical thinking, and creativity among students,” said ILA Executive Director Nicola Wedderburn. “This recognition underscores the importance of innovative approaches to literacy and the dedication of educators who are shaping the future of our young learners."
We are so grateful for our Specialists and Administration who continue to go above and beyond for our Vikings!

HFEO's Newest Scholarship: How You Can Support Today
The Homewood-Flossmoor Education Association (HFEO) is excited to announce the first recipients of their new Student Teaching Scholarship! This scholarship is awarded to past Future Teacher Scholarship recipients who have made significant progress towards their teaching careers. Three graduates from the class of 2021 who received Future Teacher Scholarships were each awarded an additional $400 to support them during their student teaching placements. The HFEO is proud to announce that two more of these graduates will be student teaching next school year, and they will also receive the Student Teaching Scholarship. Read more about these inspiring students in a recent HF Chronicle article.
Each year HF dedicates Honors Convocation Night to honor students who have earned college scholarships for the following school year. Thanks to the generosity of HFEO teachers, instructional assistants, and retired HF teachers, last year, the HFEO proudly funded and presented ten $500 awards to HF Seniors in the following categories: Service, Future Teacher, and Outstanding Student. This year marks the 9th year of the HFEO Scholarship Program, which has awarded over 50 scholarships totaling over $28,000 thus far.

You can make a tax-deductible contribution to the HFEO Scholarship Fund today! Whether that is $5, $20, $100 or even $500, your donation will have a positive impact on a future HF graduate.

Last Day to Take the 5Essentials Survey!
Your voice matters! Parents and guardians play a crucial role in shaping the educational experience for their children. That’s why we encourage all families to participate in the 5Essentials Survey, an important tool that helps schools identify strengths and areas for growth.
What is the 5Essentials Survey?
The 5Essentials Survey gathers feedback from parents, students, and staff to assess five key areas that contribute to school success:
- Effective Leaders – Strong leadership that fosters a positive school culture
- Collaborative Teachers – Educators who work together to improve instruction
- Involved Families – Strong school-home partnerships
- Supportive Environment – A safe, welcoming, and engaging school climate
- Ambitious Instruction – High expectations and rigorous academic opportunities
Why Should You Participate?
Your input helps school leaders make informed decisions to enhance student learning and well-being. A higher response rate provides a clearer picture of the school environment and ensures your voice is heard.
How to Take the Survey
The survey is confidential and only takes about 10 minutes to complete. Take the survey here before March 28, 2025 to share your thoughts.
Your feedback makes a difference! Let’s work together to ensure the best educational experience for all students. Take the 5Essentials Survey today!
