Message from Principal Parravano
As we get ready to welcome students back to South, there are several changes this year that may take a little getting used to, and yes, one of those changes involves cell phones. Beginning this school year, Michigan law requires school districts to have a policy that keeps personal electronic devices out of the classroom during instructional time. That means cell phones, earbuds, smart watches, Meta glasses, and other personal electronic devices will be taking a break while our students are learning. We know that asking teenagers to part with their phones (even temporarily) is no small thing, so we are asking for your help as we strengthen our off and out of sight policy together.
At South, the expectation is simple: when students enter the classroom, phones are turned off and placed in the classroom caddy. Other personal electronic devices must remain off and out of sight (in a backpack) for the entire instructional period. Students will still be able to access their phones during passing time and lunch, so they will not be completely disconnected from the outside world!
Our goal is not simply to enforce rules. It is to create classrooms where students can be fully present and focused on their learning, their teachers, and one another. Your partnership in reinforcing this expectation at home will go a long way toward helping us make this school year successful.
Next week we will tackle changes at lunch.
