Hello, Deer Hill Families!

We are now officially in the home stretch with just six weeks of school remaining! While (as the calendar at the end of this newsletter illustrates) we have many end of year events in store, it's also the time of year when staff begin to carefully create cohorts for next year's 4th and 5th grade classes. To best understand Deer Hill's philosophy around the class placement process, please read this letter and feel free to contact me if I can answer any questions. If you have younger children joining us at Deer Hill next year, I invite you to join me for the Welcome Rising Grade 3 Parent Zoom which will take place on Wednesday, June 5 at 6:00. An invitation will be sent to current 2nd grade families in the next few weeks.

Deer Hill Family Handbook

CEF Spelling Bee: Registration is open for our CEF sponsored spelling bee which will take place May 13 (grade 3), May 14 (grade 4), and May 15 (grade 5) at 3:45 in the Deer Hill gym! Please see the flyer below for details. You can register on the CEF website.

Bags to Benches Program at Deer Hill Ends: May 10 is the last day that Deer Hill will be a drop off site for the Bags to Benches program. The town coordinator, Montanna Cassel, is moving out of state. There continue to be drop off locations for plastic bags at Cohasset middle and high schools through the Green Team, Stop & Shop, and Shaws. Thank you for supporting this initiative over the past year!

Attention Grade 5 Families: Principal Mills from Cohasset Middle School and I collaborate closely to ensure a smooth transition to 6th grade for our current 5th graders. Please see this document which lists the dates of all planned transition steps.

A Message from Ms. Berman re Favorites Art Night: A heartfelt Thank You to all who helped make “Favorites 2024" a brilliant success! Thank you to the Deer Hill students for all their beautiful artwork, the PSO parents for their help with the delicious and plentiful refreshments, the Deer Hill community for all their good natured support and encouragement, and lastly to the superb “Favorites Staff”, you were awesome! It was a great night that ended with the unveiling of the grade 5 art installation in the Susan B. McNamara Innovation Commons. Come take a peek!

Grade Level Math Mornings: Over the last two weeks all three grade levels invited family members or friends to join them in a morning of math games followed by a presentation by our fabulous math specialists, Mrs. Thonet and Mrs. Varney. It was an absolute success -- thoughtful math conversations mixed with laughter as students gave a peek into their math worlds. Thank you so much to Mrs. Thonet and Mrs. Varney for their careful planning, and thank you to all who joined us for taking time from your busy days to celebrate the academic accomplishments of our students.

Techsploration Assembly & Workshops: Thank you to the PSO for sponsoring our all school Techsploration assembly and grade 5 workshops. Students (and staff!) learned so much about the engineering and design process of bridge structures through these engaging prsentations.
