Dorney Park Trip for 8th Grade Students Dorney Park Trip for 8th Grade Students

Hello everyone,

Log College's annual 8th grade trip to Dorney Park will be here before we know it, so I wanted to share a reminder to serve as a Save the Date.

The trip will occur on June 4. This year's cost will be $63 for students and $75 for chaperones. (Note: a few chaperone forms had the wrong amount and were mistakenly distributed - $75 is correct). Permission slips and medical information forms were distributed to students last week. They must be returned for all attending students between 3/10-3/14 along with payment. (Payments/paperwork will not be accepted in advance). *Chaperone forms will also be distributed Tuesday but may be collected immediately. (See chaperone info below).

Chaperones

  • Space is limited and will be selected on a “first come, first-served” basis, chaperones must be an LCMS parent/guardian and must ride the bus. Chaperones must have clearances. Direct chaperone questions and your interest to greeru@centennialsd.org.

  • Volunteer Disclosure Form- Volunteers must have a Volunteer Disclosure Form on file with the HR Department.
  • Act 114 FBI Federal Criminal History Report- (Online registration through IdentoGo) (The Service Code for Pennsylvania DHS Volunteer is:1KG6ZJ.)

    • This is a two-step process: (1) Register and pay online, and schedule your fingerprinting appointment. Print the registration receipt with the PAE number. The PAE number must be provided to Human Resources; (2) Visit a fingerprinting site to have your fingerprints submitted electronically.

  • Act 151 Child Abuse History Clearance- Free for Volunteers (Online registration)

  • Act 34 State Police Criminal History Report- Free for Volunteers (Online registration)

**If you have a financial hardship, please reach out to your child's counselor.

  • Students will identify famous African Americans and create BioBanners recognizing the positive contributions towards society

  • Students will analyze several samples of African American Culture and reflect how it impacts society today.

  • Students will identify contributions of African Americans through our daily morning announcements.

  • American History classes will continue to discuss how slavery has shaped our society.

Kindness Club Kindness Club

The Log College Middle School Kindness Club has helped spread positivity since 2017! The Kindness Club consists of Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth grade girls and boys and our mascot, Maya! Students enjoy working together as a team to create acts of kindness in support of our school staff and students, as well as our community's heroes: our emergency first responders, senior living residents, and hospital patients. Kindness Club is grateful for all of the support. Stay tuned for more fun this spring!

Course Selection Course Selection

Our course selection process for next year is well underway! Students in 6th and 7th grade saw brief presentations this week from their guidance counselors about the process and answered many questions that the students had. The students are now completing their drag sheets, making selections for their expo classes. Next week, the counselors will revisit the students’ social studies classes to put the expo requests into Skyward. If you haven’t already, please check with your children about their course selections for next year!

6th Grade English: Exploring the Great Depression through Literature

Mrs. Vallalla’s 6A English classes recently wrapped up Module 1 of the Wit & Wisdom program, where students explored life during the Great Depression through two powerful texts: Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis and Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. As they read, students analyzed the struggles faced by people during this challenging time and examined how characters transformed to overcome adversity.

To deepen their understanding, students reflected on the themes of resilience and perseverance by choosing a single word to summarize what life was like during the Great Depression or what stood out to them the most. These words became part of our class graffiti wall, a visual representation of their learning (pictured here).

As we move into our next module, we are excited to continue strengthening our reading, writing, and critical thinking skills through engaging discussions and meaningful texts!

Reading is Fundamental Reading is Fundamental

Put down the phone....pick up a book!

We ask that you please encourage your child to read at home! Not only is reading a great hobby, it helps children to become better learners and helps them focus. It is the single, greatest way your child can help him or herself. Plus, more and more, reading is becoming an expectation for our English classes.
