The Power of Career and Technical Education in Strengthening Our Community

Career and Technical Education (CTE) is more than a pathway to a job; it is a pathway to a stronger, more resilient community. Across Pennsylvania and the nation, schools like Dauphin County Technical School (DCTS) are helping students develop the skills, confidence, and work ethic needed to succeed in the classroom, in the workplace, and in life.

At DCTS, we believe that preparing students for success means preparing them for every opportunity beyond high school, whether that means entering the workforce, pursuing higher education, or serving in the military. Our approach goes beyond teaching technical skills; we emphasize professionalism, communication, and adaptability. We preach the Wolverine Way and the Five Keys to Success: Work Ethic, Leadership, Teamwork, Respect, and Pride in one's work. These soft skills and employability skills are the foundation of success in any career, and they are intentionally woven into everything we do.

CTE’s Role in the Community

The impact of CTE extends far beyond the school's walls. Every student who learns a trade, earns a certification, or secures a co-op position contributes directly to the economic vitality of Central Pennsylvania. Skilled graduates strengthen local industries, support small businesses, and fill high-demand jobs that keep our region competitive and growing.

CTE also provides students with purpose. For many, hands-on learning transforms education from something they “have to do” into something they want to do. It builds confidence, fosters independence, and shows students the direct connection between effort and success. That transformation benefits not only the individual but the entire community that relies on skilled, motivated workers.

How DCTS is Leading the Way

At DCTS, we are proud to offer 24 programs of study designed to meet the needs of today’s workforce. From Automotive Technology and Computer Networking Technology to Nursing Foundations, Culinary Arts, and Masonry, our programs reflect the industries that power our region. Students learn from expert instructors with real-world experience, using modern technology and equipment that mirrors what they’ll encounter in the field.

We also take a holistic approach to education, integrating academics and career training so students see how math, science, and literacy apply to their future professions. Whether calculating measurements in Carpentry, analyzing data in Engineering Drafting and Design, or writing patient notes in the Health Sciences, our students learn to think critically and apply academic knowledge in practical, meaningful ways.

Through our cooperative education (co-op) program, students gain valuable on-the-job experience while still in school. They earn wages, build resumes, and often secure employment offers before graduation. Our business and community partners, ranging from construction firms and healthcare providers to technology companies and local service organizations, play a vital role in these opportunities. They provide mentorship, resources, and real-world connections that prepare our students for success.

A Lifelong Impact

DCTS also serves adults seeking new career opportunities through our Adult Education programs. From Certified Nurse Aide training to emerging fields in technology and skilled trades, we offer flexible pathways for individuals seeking to reskill or advance their careers. This commitment ensures that education at DCTS serves learners of all ages, strengthening the workforce and supporting families throughout our region.

The DCTS Difference

What makes DCTS special is our conviction that student success is inextricably linked to community success. Every graduate who leaves our school with skills, confidence, and direction represents the future of Central Pennsylvania. Whether they choose to work, serve, or continue their education, they carry with them the values of hard work, leadership, teamwork, respect, and pride—the foundation of what we call The Wolverine Way.

Career and Technical Education at DCTS is not just about filling jobs; it’s about building lives, families, and communities. At DCTS, we are proud to lead that mission every day by preparing our students not only for their next step, but for a lifetime of success.

Preparing for Success: Pre-NOCTI Testing at DCTS

Over the past few weeks, our students demonstrated focus, determination, and professionalism during Pre-NOCTI testing, an important milestone in their Career and Technical Education journey.

All seniors completed their written Pre-NOCTI assessments, which serve as valuable practice for the official NOCTI (National Occupational Competency Testing Institute) exams scheduled for next spring. These tests measure technical skill proficiency and are a crucial part of earning industry-recognized credentials. Pre-NOCTI testing gives students the opportunity to experience the format, pacing, and content areas they will face later in the year, while helping instructors identify strengths and areas for improvement for targeted review.

Sophomores and juniors from several programs also participated in the Pre-NOCTI process, gaining early experience with the testing environment and expectations. This helps them build confidence and set meaningful goals.

Later this school year, seniors will also demonstrate their hands-on technical skills during “MOCTI” (mock-NOCTI) testing. The MOCTI offers a practical, performance-based assessment that allows students to showcase their abilities in real-world tasks aligned with industry standards. Pre-testing is more than just a benchmark — it’s a learning tool. Instructors use the data to tailor instruction, reinforce key skills, and ensure students are prepared for careers and college. It also gives students a sense of accountability and pride in their technical expertise.

As we move into the second quarter, we’ll continue to build on this momentum by analyzing results, setting targeted goals, and celebrating student growth. Congratulations to all our students and instructors for their hard work and commitment to excellence!

The DCTS Education Foundation is an incredible organization supporting our students through scholarships and unique opportunities to enhance their educational experience.

The Foundation actively seeks new members to join its mission of making a difference. Recently, we’ve welcomed two student members, a junior and a senior—who bring valuable perspectives and energy to the team.

We’re always looking for alumni and community members to join the Foundation and contribute to the success of future Wolverines. Together, we can continue to provide life-changing opportunities for our students and build a stronger community.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month National Disability Employment Awareness Month

This October marks the 80th annual National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize the valuable contributions of employees with disabilities in the workforce. These disabilities include not only visible or apparent conditions, but also mental health and other non-apparent disabilities.

Throughout the month, employers are encouraged to review relevant federal and state policies, assess current practices for compliance and accessibility, and promote education and awareness about all types of disabilities among employees and supervisors.

As a Career and Technical Education school, DCTS proudly acknowledges the dedication and hard work of our students with disabilities as they prepare to enter and succeed in the workforce.

FLEXIBLE INSTRUCTION DAY (FID) INFORMATION AND SCHOOL CLOSURES

Dauphin County Technical School will be taking advantage of our Flexible Instructional Day, (FID), program as outlined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for inclement weather days. Please note that the district can only use up to five FIDs for the 2024-2025 school year.

Also, please note that not every inclement weather day may be used as a FID. In other words, we may still cancel school days during inclement weather, and we would need to make those days up on the school calendar.

Student participation is required for a successful inclement weather FID. By continuing education during these weather emergencies, it will allow us to preserve our vacation days as scheduled while keeping instruction moving forward.

Teachers will be conducting the day using an abbreviated schedule that will be shared by your building principal. Additionally, teachers and support staff will be available throughout the school day for assistance. Please reach out to your teachers and counselors with any questions you may have. Families will receive additional instructions from the building principal regarding individual school schedules.
