Meeting Recap Meeting Recap

The District 146 Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, February 10, 2025 at Fulton School in Tinley Park.

The meeting began with the recognition of 11 students who took part in the District 146 Spelling Bee. The students recognized had previously competed in their school spelling bees and advanced to the District Spelling Bee held on February 4.

The students recognized at the Board Meeting were: Kelvin Falcatan and Ahmmad Sayouri from Fierke; Elijah Connell, Sabrina Hammad, and Kailey Mackrow from Fulton; Monica Jiang and Jackson Podrazik from Kruse; Charlotte Ly and Nora Novak from Memorial; and Mareah Alharshawi and Majd Al-Khattab from Central.

Monica Jiang was the District champion and will represent District 146 in the South Cook ISC Scripps Spelling Bee, held at Southland College Charter Preparatory High School in Richton Park on March 4.

During the meeting, the Board heard the following from Superintendent Dr. Jeff Stawick:

  • On January 22, CMS hosted the Tinley Park Police Department for an internet and social media safety presentation. Dr. Stawick thanked the TPPD for their continued partnership and Detectives Garrity, Van Schouwen, and Rzeszutko for their time.
  • The District will host summer school programs beginning July 7 and ending on July 31. All classes will be held at Fulton. Administration is currently gauging staff interest and availability.
  • In March, Dr. Stawick will be asking the Board to waive a board policy to allow an unopposed candidate for the Board of Education to attend closed session meetings. Current Board Policy restricts candidates access to closed session.
  • The District’s Early Learning/Pre-K programs at Fulton and Memorial have received the ExceleRate Illinois Gold Circle of Quality. This is the highest achievement an early learning program can receive.
  • A draft 2025-2026 school calendar was presented. The Board will be asked to approve the calendar at the March meeting.
  • The District’s Policy and Governance Committee met to review a list of policy revisions suggested by the Policy Reference Education Subscription Service (PRESS). The Board will be asked to ratify the updates at the March Board Meeting.

The Board also heard the following:

  • Mrs. Megan Mitera, Fulton School Principal, updated the board on family engagement opportunities, student extracurricular activities, student successes, and daily activities at Fulton.
  • The president of the teachers’ union discussed many of the activities that have been going on at each building including fundraisers, 100th day of school celebrations, and STEAM activities.
  • Jeff Charleston, Director of Business Services, informed the Board that the District is in the second year of the 2024 Property Tax Relief Grant, and year one of the 2025 grant. The Board will be asked to approve the $2,033,302 abatement for 2024, and $2,257,005 for the 2025 abatement at the March meeting. In return, the District will receive a permanent state funding increase of $3,104,229 per year.

The Board took the following action at the meeting:

  • Approved a monetary gift left to the District upon the death of a former District employee.
  • Approved the Title I Plans for Fulton School and Central Middle School
  • Approved a bid for updates to Central Middle School. The project will cost just under $2.5 million.

Before adjourning, the Board met in Closed Session to discuss collective bargaining and personnel matters.

The minutes of the February meeting will be available on BoardDocs once approved by the Board of Education at the next meeting. A recording of the meeting can be viewed on the District's YouTube Channel.
