Hello Thunderbird Nation!!

We had a wonderful week at Tahoe Valley Elementary! Our students were engaged in lots of great learning, and the beautiful weather made it an especially enjoyable week on campus. Even with the sunshine, we still have snow on the ground—so please remember that any students who would like to play in the snow need to come to school with all their snow gear.

We also want to take a moment to remind everyone to help keep our community safe during dismissal. We’ve noticed some concerns in the parking lot at the end of the day. Please drive slowly, stay alert, and park only in designated parking spaces. Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us keep our students and families safe. We truly appreciate your support and partnership! For your convenience I have included our pick up protocol below.

Have a great week!

Have an extraordinary week!

Have your best week yet!!!

Pat

*PARKING LOT END OF DAY PICK UP: If you choose to forgo bussing, please try to be on time to pick up your student.

  • Stay in your vehicle;

  • Your child will be escorted to your vehicle.

  • Sorry, no mingling in front of the classrooms as it just adds to the possible confusion.

  • If you will be sitting in the pick up line for any length of time, please turn off your engine to cut down on emissions.

  • Please be respectful of staff “traffic directors”, they have your children’s safety in mind.

  • As I’m sure we all agree, cell phone usage while driving in our school parking lot is absolutely unacceptable (talking or texting). Besides being against the law, it is highly dangerous with the possibility that a child could dart into traffic at any time.

  • Please drive slowly, safely in the areas around the school. There are numerous complaints each year from the neighbors that parents are driving recklessly by their house to and from school each day. I recommend they contact law enforcement and they have been ticketing parents for speeding/cell usage, etc.

  • Thank you for your cooperation to help keep our/your students safe!

Have a great week!

Have an extraordinary week!

Have your best week yet!!!

This Week in TK

Please read the note above from Mr. Harnett and the calendar at the bottom of the newsletter for important news and dates.

This week we learned how to be healthy and wash our hands for Letter Hh Week. Nurse Fred helped us understand germs with our hand washing lesson, did you know germs are everywhere?! We learned more about snow, snowmen, and The Mitten, and Mrs. Ervin's class even had a fun sing-along visit with Dr. Jean to sing some of our favorite songs.

The snow may have stopped falling from the sky, but our TK playground is still covered in snow and ice. A good rule of thumb is to send all snow gear if there is any snow on the ground at lake level.

A reminder to our TK families there is no school on Monday 01/19 in observation of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

This Week in K Grade

Hello Kindergarten Families!

It was a wonderful and full week in Kindergarten! We are continuing to learn our letter names and sounds, as well as reading and building short words. Students are also practicing their high-frequency words and showing growing confidence each day.

We are having lots of fun in art and science, exploring, creating, and learning together. In math, we put the finishing touches on our last unit and have begun a new unit focused on describing and composing 2-D shapes.

Thank you for your continued support at home. We look forward to another great week of learning ahead!

Warmly,

Your Kindergarten Teachers

This Week in 1st Grade

In Language Arts

We are continuing to work on short vowel words, various blends, spelling and sentence writing using capital letters and punctuation. We have also started talking about what nouns are. They are a person, place or a thing. We are also discussing basic story genres such as fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, and realistic fiction. When you are reading at home, please remind your child that he/she should be underlining each word with his/her finger as he/she reads it, along with sounding each word out. Please ask your child questions about what he/she read for further support with comprehension. Also ask your child about key details, characters, setting, and main idea of the story and consider using the pictures in the story to help them understand what the story is about. When writing at home, make sure to capitalize at the beginning of sentences, have punctuation at the end and neat letter formation.

In Math

We are continuing to work on adding and subtracting within numbers to 20 along with development of basic math facts and fact fluency and counting by 1's, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s along with some light work on the numbers to 120. Our addition strategies include using counters to model, using our fingers to add, as well as basic work with number lines. Our subtraction strategies include focusing on crossing off items, taking objects away, using a number line and counting on. Some key words that we are addressing when exploring word problems include: in all, altogether, and how many are left.

How to Help at Home
A great way to support your child’s math learning is to work on math fact fluency at home which can be done using math flash cards or even homemade flashcards that you and your child can come up with together.

In Science -
Weather/Climate Unit- We are discussing some of the elements of weather as well as the various types of weather and why we have weather here on Earth (hint: it's because the Earth has a slight tilt). We have also introduced the Water Cycle and its four phases.

We have been working on where in the world we are, the different continents and oceans, what the difference is between a state and country, and what features can be found in cities, towns, and rural areas. Lastly, we are continuing to discuss different American symbols such as the Statue of Liberty, the White House, and the American Flag. We have also been reviewing the importance of Dr. Martin Luther King's.

This week, students got a visit from the Construction class at the High School! Stuents got to learn/practice either hammering nails or drilling nails. In math, students continued to dive deeper into DIVISION! Students picked out their NEXT animal they would like to study! They began writing/planning their second informationa essay on this animal of their choice. In reading, they have new vocabulary and read some new stories with those words. In science, they learned about Earth's 4 systems (biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and geosphere)!

We have been having so much fun playing on the snow mound and enjoying recess time on the playground. In the classroom, we have continued building our reading skills by learning new sight words and practicing letter sound blends. In math, we have been working hard on skip counting and solving addition problems. We were also excited to welcome a new student who joined our class this week, and everyone has been kind and welcoming as he gets settled in.
