Warren School Weekly Update

October 9, 2026
All families should have received a text message reminding you of today’s early release at 12:00 noon. If you did not receive a text, please let us know so we can help ensure you receive future reminders.
Today’s early release provides important time for staff professional development. Just as we encourage our students to keep learning, our educators also need opportunities to grow. This time allows staff to learn teaching strategies, review student progress, and work together to meet children’s academic, social, and emotional needs. During today’s training, staff will also practice a medical response drill to strengthen our coordination and preparedness when someone needs immediate medical assistance. You will find more information about our safety protocols below. Thank you for supporting this investment in our students and school community.
On Monday, October 12, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day, an opportunity to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. It also reminds us to learn about the hardships Indigenous communities have experienced and to recognize their resilience and continued presence today. For our young learners, this is an opportunity to build curiosity, empathy, and respect by learning that Indigenous peoples represent many distinct communities with their own traditions, languages, and stories. These conversations connect to our school’s core values and help children understand the importance of listening to, learning from, and respecting others.
When we return on Tuesday, October 13, we will enjoy Drop Everything and Play! At one point during the school day, we will pause our usual routines and make time for play. Play gives children opportunities to use their imaginations, solve problems, practice cooperation, and build friendships. It is an important part of how young children learn and connect with one another. We will also welcome Ashland High School students throughout the day as part of their community service day. We look forward to connecting our younger and older students and appreciate their time and service to our school.
On Wednesday, October 21, everyone is invited to wear orange for Unity Day. Unity Day brings communities together to promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to help prevent bullying. For our students, this means practicing everyday actions such as inviting someone to play, using kind words, respecting differences, and asking an adult for help when needed. Wearing orange sends a shared message that every child deserves to feel safe, welcome, and included.
Our whole-school assembly will also take place on October 21. We usually invite students and staff to wear blue to show their Ashland spirit; for this assembly, we invite everyone to wear orange in recognition of Unity Day.
Have a great long holiday weekend!

Important Safety Update: Understanding Our Protocols and Parent Guidelines
We want families to understand our school’s safety protocols and how we communicate during an incident.
What is a “Stay in Place”?
A Stay in Place is used for isolated incidents that do not pose a threat to the overall safety of the school community. Classroom instruction continues, but hallway traffic and entry to or exit from the building are temporarily restricted.
We may initiate a Stay in Place to:
Keep hallways clear when an ambulance is called for a student or staff member.
Protect a student’s privacy.
Respond to an environmental issue, power failure, or event in the surrounding community.
Building Threats and Safety Drills
ALICE Protocol: In the event of a direct safety threat inside or immediately outside the building, our school follows the ALICE framework: Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. This provides staff and students with response options based on the information available.
Announced Drills: All safety and evacuation drills are announced to parents and students in advance.
How Families Can Help During an Incident
If a safety protocol is activated, please:
Avoid calling the main office. Phone lines need to remain available for staff and emergency responders.
Do not come to the school unless instructed. Additional traffic can interfere with emergency vehicle access and safety procedures.
Wait for official communication. Our immediate priority is caring for students and staff and managing the situation. We will share updates and instructions with families as soon as possible.
