Principal's Message
Dear Students, Parents, and Families
Our school goals for the 2026โ2027 school year are centered on improving student attendance and increasing student achievement in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics.
Student Attendance: Each morning, teachers are asked to take accurate attendance during the first period of the school day. This allows us to generate a daily absentee list and reconcile our records with families who have reported their child absent. Our goal is to achieve 95% student attendance each day. Reaching this goal will require a collective effort among students, families, teachers, and school staff to reinforce the importance of consistent attendance and its direct connection to academic success.
Student Achievement in ELA and Mathematics: In ELA and Mathematics, teachers are reviewing curriculum, implementing effective instructional practices, and using assessments of student learning to guide their instruction. Our focus is on ensuring that curriculum is aligned with established standards and that classroom instruction addresses the diverse learning needs of our students. Through the ongoing review of student assessment data, classroom performance, and progress toward proficiency, teachers will identify areas of strength, address learning gaps, and adjust instructional strategies to improve outcomes.
Throughout the school year, departments will collaborate after school to review curriculum, share effective instructional practices, and evaluate the impact of their teaching on student learning. By establishing clear learning expectations, monitoring student progress, and providing timely interventions and support, we aim to increase the number of students meeting and exceeding proficiency expectations in both ELA and Mathematics.
I share this information with you to emphasize that our daily focus must remain on ensuring that students are present, available, and prepared to learn. As we progress through the school year, we must remain focused on ensuring that every student is able to succeed academically and reach their full potential.
Sincerely,
Jonathan D. Cavallo Ed.D.

Stand Together: Wear Orange on Unity Day, October 21! ๐งก
Wednesday, October 21 marks the annual Unity Day, the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month organized by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center.
On this day, we ask everyone to wear and share the color orange to send a powerful, visible message that we stand together for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Bullying affects nearly 1 in 5 students, but peer intervention can stop bullying behaviors in more than half of all cases. By wearing orange, you show those who are struggling that they are never alone. Throw on your favorite orange shirt, socks, or accessories, and help us fill our space with a collective message of safety and hope!
It's Smart to Be Bright
If you're heading into the woods during hunting season, a little preparation goes a long way. Wear bright clothing so you can be seen, keep pets leashed and visible, and check when and where hunting is allowed before you go.
Let hunters know you're there by whistling, talking, or wearing a bell, then keep unnecessary noise down so you don't disturb wildlife or other people.

Wildcats At Work
Nicole, a 12th grader, is turning her passion for baking into hands-on experience as she works toward her dream of one day owning her own bakery. Four afternoons each week, Nicole interns with Hannah Small, owner of Butter Mountain Bakery, located at the Old School Enrichment Center in Wilmington.
Together, Hannah and Nicole are busy creating all kinds of delicious treats, including fresh breads, rolls, bagels, and plenty of cookies! Nicole is gaining valuable experience in the day-to-day work of a bakery while learning more about a career she hopes to make her future.
We are excited to see Nicole exploring her passion and building skills that will help her reach her goals. A big thank you to Hannah Small and Butter Mountain Bakery for welcoming Nicole and providing this wonderful opportunity!
Classroom Sneak Peaks
Physical Science with Mr. Oyer
Students ignited steel wool to learn about conservation of mass, chemical and physical changes, and the importance of experimentation and data collection. All students demonstrated excellent safety practices as well. Congratulations to Phoenix, who correctly predicted the mass of the burnt steel wool would increase.
Outdoor Skills with Mr. Oyer
Students studied animal tracks as part of the unit on wildlife awareness.
Damian found deer tracks on the baseball diamond!
English and Library with Mrs. Simpson
Starting in English class and then into Library class, 6th grade students looked for words with a "spooky" connotation in Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven".
Then they used some of those found words to write their own Spooky poems.
Here are some of them.
They chose to publish them anonymously for now so that they can vote on the top 3 without bias.
We will share more in the weeks leading up to Halloween.
Parents, ask your student if one of these poems is theirs!!! ๐
Reality Fair
On October 6, some of our students attended The Reality Fair held at Leland and Gray High School.
Upon arrival, students visited booths where they learned how to write a check, read a pay stub, make change, and spot internet scams.
After lunch, students were given an occupation with a corresponding monthly wage and had to navigate different booths and decide on rent, utilities, transportation, and other monthly items.
Warm Welcome to our NEW Guidance Counselor!!!
