Mr Young's Reflection of the Week Mr Young's Reflection of the Week

zoom_out_map

We hope you have had a good start to the spring term. For year 11 and year 13 students they are down to their last full term before their exams! Our message here has been, that how you use that remaining time is vitally important. We know from research that the key to making things ‘stick’ in the brain is to revisit topics regularly and make the brain ‘work hard’. I will be sharing some revision tips over the next few weeks which will hopefully prove useful. We know that exams are stressful and that it is important that we support our young people through this period but that one of the best ways to deal with that stress is to ensure you are fully prepared and that process can begin now.

Students point of view Students point of view

Asli joined us at OAE after studying her GCSE’s. She is studying A Level Sociology, History and Psychology.

"I decided to continue with my education at Oasis Academy Enfield as it offers a wide range of subjects that align with my academic interests and future career aspirations. The school’s strong reputation for excellent teaching and supportive learning environment was also a key factor in my decision. OAE provides Sixth Form students with the opportunity to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities which creates a positive school community. We recently attended a visit to Northeastern University, London which was an insightful experience that broadened my perspective on higher education. It was fascinating to see a city university campus and to discover the different courses they have on offer and what was involved in studying at degree level. They also gave me some great advice about how to write my personal statement. Overall, my experience at OAE has been rewarding, allowing me to grow both academically and personally as I move forward in my academic journey.”

Essential Reads Essential Reads

Our subject specialists have identified their ‘Essential Reads’. This week it is ‘Atomic Habits’ by James Clear and is something a bit different in that it is not subject specific but about how making simple small changes can have life-altering outcomes. He uncovers a handful of simple life hacks (the forgotten art of Habit Stacking, the unexpected power of the Two Minute Rule, or the trick to entering the Goldilocks Zone), and delves into cutting-edge psychology and neuroscience to explain why they matter. Along the way, he tells inspiring stories of Olympic gold medallists, leading CEOs, and distinguished scientists who have used the science of tiny habits to stay productive, motivated, and happy. Definitely worth a read!

This newsletter, I am actually showcasing myself! While I am Head of Sixth Form, I am also Head of Criminology, one of our most popular option subjects and I thought it was important to share with you why I love teaching the Criminology course.

As mentioned in the last newsletter, to start the process of preparing our Year 12 students with the knowledge, advice and guidance they need to make informed decisions about their future careers, we took the entire year group to St Katherine’s Docks on the banks of The Thames to visit Northeastern University London. NU London might be an institution you haven’t heard much about but it is actually part of the global campus network of the American Northeastern University based in Boston, Massachusetts. It is therefore a small ‘city’ university but one with a global reach offering innovative and flexible academic progammes and opportunities to study in the USA.

We spent the day discussing post 18 options and how to begin the process of choosing a course and where to study and then had a really useful session on how to write a Personal Statement which is a key part of the UCAS application. It was great to see and experience a university firsthand, and while small, it felt like I was in the ‘Google’ offices and might be somewhere our students consider applying to next year.

For those considering apprenticeships, we have Savills coming in to run a session on CV writing at the end of January. This is just part of the entitlement of our 6th formers and to help them prepare for those next steps!

Upcoming Dates:

We have just completed the January external exams. Students in Year 13 will have their last opportunity to hone their Exam technique with mocks running from 3rd-14th March. These are a vital opportunity for students to develop and perfect how they plan and manage their revision and practice under timed exam conditions. I have included below one of the revision strategies we teach here at OAE.

Astars Oasis Basketball Academy European youth league experience continued in December as Astars took a team to compete at the prestigious sports facility in Rio Maior.

The boys didn’t disappoint as we finished with 3 wins and 1 loss in Stage 1 of the U17 competition. Stand out performances from Afolabi Oshikoya who averaged 18.8 points and 12.8 rebounds per game, he gained selection to the tournament All-star 5 team. Special mention to Hayden Obeng who also had a solid tournament and was named our team MVP with averages of 16.5 points 5.5 rebounds 3.5 assists.

The second stage of the tournament takes place Thursday 23rd January to Sunday 26th January and we are well positioned in the league to make it to the super finals for the first time. Lets go OBA.

Our Ethos at Oasis Academy Enfield Our Ethos at Oasis Academy Enfield

Our ethos is rooted in what we believe and who we are. Grounded in our story, it is an expression of our character; a set of values that inform and provide the lens on everything we do.

  • A passion to include
  • A desire to treat people equally respecting differences
  • A commitment to healthy, open relationships
  • A deep sense of hope that things can change and be transformed
  • A sense of perseverance to keep going for the long haul

It is these ethos values that we want to be known for and to live by. We are committed to a model of inclusion, equality, healthy relationships, hope, and perseverance throughout all the aspects of the life and culture of every Oasis Hub and academy community.

We encourage every member of our family, be that staff or student, to align themselves to these ethos values. The values themselves are inspired by the life, message and example of Jesus but we make it clear that we will not impose on anyone, the beliefs that underpin our ethos values. We recognise and celebrate the richness that spiritual and cultural diversity brings to our community, respecting the beliefs and practices of other faiths in the hope that we will provide a welcoming environment for all.

9 Habits at Oasis Academy Enfield 9 Habits at Oasis Academy Enfield

To help us in this process of personal growth and development we have the Oasis 9 Habits. It is our bespoke and unique approach to character development. We know that by living the way of the Habits, the Oasis Ethos will become second nature to us.
