Second-LO History & Transportation

Did you know, students used to have to take a boat to get to LO schools from Milwaukie? Did you know that trees float, but pennys sink because the ability to float is based on density, NOT weight? Now our second graders know! After learning about this interesting history, doing a couple of experiments, second graders were given the challenge to create their own boats. They needed to follow the given criteria--it must go across the "river" and keep 13 kids (pennies) dry. They were allowed to use one piece of foil, five straws, five popsicle sticks and duct tape! They could test and redesign once! Ahoy!
