Utilizing Grading Groups to Differentiate Instruction

One of my favorite features within Schoology has to be Grading Groups. You can use Grading Groups to individualize instruction for bilingual students, students needing personalized instruction, enrichment work, and even for group projects.

To create a Grading Group, navigate to one of your Courses. Select Members on the left side panel. On the right side of your page, you will see a gray area titled Organize Members into Grading Groups. Click on the Add Grading Group button. Give your group a name. Next, select the students you would like added to this group. After you have selected your students, select Create Grading Group.

Once you have created your Grading groups, you are ready to begin assigning course materials. Click on Add Materials to create an Assignment, Assessment, or Discussion. At the bottom of the screen under Options you will see three dots shaped as a pyramid. This is the Individually Assign button. Click on this button to activite the Assign To feature. You can assign work to individual students or to one of your Grading Groups. The names of your Grading Groups will automatically populate as you begin to type. Click Create to complete the process.

When you assign materials to a Grading Group or an individual student, the item is only visible to those you have assigned it to. In the Gradebook, you will only see scores for those assigned the materials. Students not assigned the material will have a dash (-) displayed by their names. From within the Gradebook, you can also filter assignments by Grading Groups. In the left corner, click on All Members to see a drop-down list of your course Grading Groups.

Sharing Lesson Resources with your Team via Schoology

Who is all in when it comes to work smarter and not harder? I am pretty sure everyone's hand just went up. Sharing lessons, assessments, and resources with others is easy to do within Schoology. You can share and import resources several different ways; from within a Course, from within a Group or even from within Resources.

Before you can begin sharing, you will need to create a Schoology Group for your team. This can easily be done with just a few clicks. Start by clicking on the Groups tab, select My Groups and then select Create Group. Give your Group a name and select Create. Now, that you have created your Group you will need to add your Members. Select Members from the left side panel and click on Add Members. To add a Member, you will search through your campus list and select the names of those you would like to add. To automatically add members to your Group check the box in the lower left corner, "Add members without invite." If you want a member to be able to add to your Group Resources, they will need to have Co-Admin rights. Click on the gear to the right of a member's name and select "Make Admin." That was pretty easy wasn't it?

Now that you have created your Group you are ready to start sharing. Let's talk about the three different ways you and your team can share. Just in case you are wondering, even entire folders and their contents can be shared.

Sharing an Item from within the Courses Tab

  • To share an item from within a Course, navigate to the item you want to share. Click on the Settings Gear and select Save to Resources. In the Save Folder to Resources window that appears, use the drop down menu to select which Collection/Group you want to save your resource to and select Save Copy.

Sharing an Item from within the Groups Tab
  • To share from within a Group, navigate to the group you want to share resources with. Select Resources from the left side panel and then select Add Resources. With this method, you can easily create resources for everyone on your team to use as a template. Notice, you also have the option to create folders to organize your shared resources.

Sharing an Item from within the Resources Tab
  • The last way to share resources is from the Resources tab. Click on the Resources Tab. On the left panel, select Group and then select your Group from the Group Resources drop down list. Next, select Add Resources to add or create your own resources. Items created within Resources will be shared with your team as a template.

Special Google Drive Note: An assignment that contains attachments from Google Drive will need to be edited by each teacher. Each teacher will need to add his/her OWN copy of the Google file from Google Drive in order to share it with students.

Ready to add your resources to your Courses? Let's talk about the three different ways you can do that.

Adding an Item from within the CoursesTab

  • Navigate to the Course and folder where you want to add the Resource to. Click on the Add Materials button, scroll down and select Import from Resources. In the Import from Resources window, select Group from the left panel and then navigate to your group under Group Resources. Click on the item you want to use and select Import. Before you click on Import a second time, you will see Advanced Options. Under Advanced Options, you can set your own grading points, due date, category, and grading scale all before importing the item into your selected Course.

Adding an Item from within the Groups Tab
  • From the Groups tab, select your Group. Click on Resources and find the resource you want to use. Next, select the Gear and then select Add to Course. You can then navigate to the Course you want to add it to while still having the option to decide the folder location, grading points, due date, category, and grading scale.

Adding an Item from within the Resources Tab
  • From the Resources tab, select Group from the left side panel and then select the name of your group from the Group Resources drop down list. Navigate to the item you want to use. Select the Gear and then select Add to Course. In the Add to Course window, select the Course you want to add the item to. You can designate a specific folder location within the Course where you would like the resource added. Click on Add to complete the process.
