New Year, New Adventures
George Walton Academy upper school students start the new year with learning experiences that depart from the norm as their academic curriculum is paused and they discover new ideas, places, and opportunities. GWA Bulldogs are traveling abroad, working as interns, participating in engaging courses on campus, serving the community, and exploring local points of interest throughout our Winter Term. Students may choose one of three options for the two-week session: travel, internships or capstone learning experiences (courses).
Our Winter Term courses include Life Skills, Community Service, Mythology, Shark Tank, Atlanta Experience, Exploring Walton County and Beyond, and Brain Games. Each course is a full-day experience, and with their assigned group, all students will participate in every course offered. Teachers have planned a variety of activities designed to engage students as they work with others to create a product and presentation for the Shark Tank judges, elevate their critical thinking skills, delve into history at the Atlanta History Center and the Fernbank and Carlos Museums, learn how to plan and budget for an event, bake cookies from scratch, get creative while exploring ancient mythology, learn improv at On Stage, visit nearby colleges and serve others at local senior residences and work at F.I.S.H.
Students are busy gaining real-world knowledge during their Winter Term internships. This option is open to any junior or senior and they must secure their internship in their field of interest. This year we have 124 students participating. You will find our students working in law offices, municipal offices, medical practices, public schools, retail companies, construction and design firms, and with event organizers, to name a few. We are grateful to the businesses and organizations that provide our students with the opportunity to explore a potential career choice. Many of our former students have credited their Winter Term internship with their decision to pursue a field of work or their decision not to.
Winter Term 2025 trips will provide engaging learning opportunities for upper school students in Peru, South Korea/Japan, and France. Our 42 travelers will explore culture, cuisine, arts, architecture, history, nature, science, technology, and more during their excursions. Students visiting Peru will complete service learning projects and leadership development, and visit the UNESCO World Heritage site Machu Picchu. Those traveling to South Korea will visit the DMZ, the N. Seoul Tower and Observatory, Samsung Innovation Museum, and in Japan, they will go to Electric Town, JAXA Space Agency, and the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. The group traveling in France will explore famous sites in Paris, Lyon, the Alps, and Geneva, and take in the view of Mont Blanc. Additionally, five students are participating in our exchange program in Spain and France.
The benefits of the Winter Term experience extend beyond the value of the courses, trips, and internships. Within each activity, each day spent in a new place, or work done in the real world, students are operating outside of their comfort zone, learning to collaborate in new ways, meeting new people, and meeting daily challenges with confidence. These soft skills will serve them well as they move into adulthood.
While Winter Term gives students a break from their regular studies, this invigorating start to the spring semester supports the virtues of George Walton Academy’s mission “to inspire lives of intellectual curiosity, integrity and purpose.” We look forward to having all students back on campus and learning about their adventures.

Brain Games – Practicing the Art of Problem Solving
This Winter Term class is focused on the highly sophisticated art of problem solving and critical thinking. Lead teacher for the course, Mrs. Watts, provides classroom time for students to learn how to challenge themselves with thought puzzles, codebreaking, high level discussion, and engineering design challenges. They venture off campus each day to an Escape Room to complete a group challenge. So far, all groups have been successful in escaping the room!
Some of the thought-provoking discussions tackled in the course this week are challenges we currently face as a school. Using the Socratic method, students are taught to use their voice coupled with research and facts to drive conversations about cell phone usage, dress code, and academic integrity. These discussions will in turn provide insightful feedback for the school leadership team to incorporate when tackling current issues.
Mythology Meets Imagination
Ms. Pickens' Winter Term course, Mythology, offers GWA students a thrilling adventure through the ancient world! Students kick off the day with a storytelling session of Theseus and the Minotaur, followed by a small group challenge in which they create their own mythical monsters, blending human and animal forms that they share with one another in a gallery walk. Next, their knowledge of ancient myth and the speed of their buzzer fingers are tested in a fast-paced Olympian trivia challenge. After lunch, the students work together in their small groups to film TikTok-style commercials featuring gods and monsters promoting their own products! To end the day, the students get creative with a Mythological Heroes art contest, followed by a commercial reveal and awards ceremony. A day full of myth, imagination, and fun!
Learning Life Skills
In the Life Skills Winter Term experience led by Mrs. Meeks, students are learning various life skills while taking the day to plan a party. Students must determine what type of party they want to host and what their theme will be and then must plan a party to present to the class. Students must create an invitation, design the decor, bake (from scratch) cookies for their guests, develop a party game for all guests to enjoy, stay within a budget, and develop a presentation detailing all their party plans. Along with having a fun day, students will learn and utilize skills including:
- Budgeting
- Kitchen safety
- Following/adjusting a recipe
- Invitation design and etiquette
- Team work
- Presentation design (aesthetically pleasing, informative)
- Giving a presentation (eye contact, connecting with your audience confidently)
- Sportsmanship
- Creative thought to develop their party theme and designing a party with available resources
Now Presenting
Last semester fourth-grade students were tasked with showcasing their chosen independent reading book through a poster. They had to manage their time well over the course of two months, having to read a novel within their reading level and create their poster outside of class time. Posters had to include literary elements they discussed in class, such as genre, plot elements, theme, conflict, and resolution. Each student gave an oral presentation to the class explaining their book. Fourth graders will complete another book report in the spring, and they will focus on improving their oral presentation skills.

Life-Saving Skills
GWA faculty and staff members gathered in the cafeteria on Monday to take the Stop the Bleed course under the guidance and instruction from local first responders. They learned how to take the appropriate actions when dealing with someone who has suffered an injury and subsequent bleeding. They learned three quick techniques to help save a life before someone bleeds out: (1) How to use your hands to apply pressure to a wound; (2) How to pack a wound to control bleeding; (3) How to correctly apply a tourniquet. These three techniques will empower you to assist in an emergency and potentially save a life.
Special thanks to GWA nurses, Morgan Ooley and Libba Ford, for making this event possible and to Northside Gwinnett Emergency Department, City of Monroe Fire Department, Walton County EMA and Walton County Fire Rescue for providing the instruction.
