I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work at Underwood Elementary! I have the privilege of working alongside wonderful staff, students, and parents who care about our school and the success of our kids. Being part of this community, especially one I grew up in, makes this work even more meaningful. I want to see Underwood students succeed, both in school and long after they leave our doors.

As we continue to grow, I want us to focus on more than academics. We are working hard to improve test scores, strengthen instruction, and provide opportunities for every student to learn and grow. We are seeing progress! But I also want us to grow in our sense of community, connection, and involvement.

We are taking steps in that direction by starting a Parent/Community-Teacher Organization (PTO), creating more opportunities for families to get involved, and strengthening the connection between our school and community.

I think we sometimes spend so much time worrying about everything that could go wrong with our kids and school that we forget to create opportunities for things to go right. What if we spent more time creating positive experiences, building relationships, celebrating successes, and helping kids discover what they are capable of accomplishing?

So, what can YOU do to help?

You don't have to make a huge commitment to make a difference. Small things add up!

  • Get involved! Join our new PTO and help create opportunities for students.

  • Volunteer! Help with school activities, events, or classroom projects.

  • Share your talents! Share your career, hobbies, skills, or experiences with our students.

  • Show your support! Attend school events, cheer on our kids, and celebrate their accomplishments.

  • Support our teachers! A kind word, a thank-you, or a helping hand goes a long way.

  • Be a positive voice! Celebrate the good things happening in our school and community.

  • Share ideas! If you see an opportunity to make Underwood better, we want to hear it!

Our kids need all of us: parents, teachers, grandparents, businesses, and community members who believe in them and invest in their future. Schools cannot do it alone. It takes all of us working together.

I grew up here, and I believe in this community. I believe in our students, staff, and families. I want Underwood to be a place where kids have opportunities, feel supported, build confidence, and know their community is cheering them on.

Celebrating Our Growth: Underwood Elementary Exits TSI! Celebrating Our Growth: Underwood Elementary Exits TSI!

We are excited and proud to share that Underwood Elementary School has officially exited Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) status!

This is a significant accomplishment and a reflection of the hard work, dedication, and teamwork of our teachers, students, families, and community.

Over the past two years, we have been intentional about improving student proficiency in Math and English Language Arts (ELA), increasing student engagement, and strengthening overall academic growth in both content areas.

Our teachers have worked hard to strengthen their instructional strategies, try new approaches, and find meaningful ways to engage and challenge every student. Our students have also stepped up by working hard, setting personal learning goals, and taking greater ownership of their learning.

Exiting TSI is something to celebrate, but it is not where our work ends! We are committed to continuing this momentum, strengthening instruction, and ensuring every student makes meaningful progress. Our goal remains to help all students grow academically and become Choice Ready.

Thank you to our families and community for your continued support, encouragement, and partnership. This achievement belongs to all of us!

Happy Fall!

For our Accelerated Reader program this year, I am selecting “AR Stars of the Month.” These will be either the student in each grade earning the most points for the month or a student who has made significant improvement. They will be posted in the hallway outside the Library. April’s AR Stars are: Isla - 2nd, Emerson - 3rd, Axel - 4th, Madden - 5th, and Kaylee - 6th. Way to read!

The theme for the 2026-2027 Accelerated Reader program is “Ride the Reading Railroad!” There are train tracks up on the wall by the Library, and students in grades 2-6 each colored a train engine to represent themselves as they earn points. For those not familiar with the program, when students finish reading a book, they can take a short quiz about the story. They are awarded points based on how many questions they answer correctly and the difficulty level of the book. Point goals have been set for students to earn prizes. Our goals this year start at five points and go up to two hundred, although they may of course earn more points than that. There will once again be an AR Field Trip in the spring for those who achieve that milestone. This year, students in grades 2-3 need to earn 50 points to earn the field trip, and those in grades 4-6 need to earn 100 points.

During September and October, PreK Library consisted of fall-related stories and activities. All classes celebrated Dot Day the week of September 14th. Grades PreK-3 also talked about screen time and read The Couch Potato for Digital Citizenship Week on Oct. 19-21. Since school started, Kindergarten through 2nd grade Library focused on how to choose Library books using the 5-Finger Rule, Book Care, Parts of a Book, and Fiction vs. Non-Fiction. 1st grade also visited the Bookmobile for the first time in September! Since school started, grades 3-5 focused on the Dewey Decimal System, Sora, and Genres. The rest of the semester, PreK will do stories related to Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Kindergarten and 1st grade will primarily focus on digital literacy skills with introductory coding using the Kodable website. Grades 2-5 will be primarily focused on digital literacy skills learning typing and introductory coding. 5th grade will also do some Christmas Traditions research.

The Bookmobile will be here on Thursday, November 19th. Please help remind students to return Bookmobile items if they haven’t already. Any books found after their visit can be returned to the school or Underwood Public Library. Thank you!

Book Blast was once again a great success this fall! Thanks to your participation, every student in our elementary school received at least FOUR books of their own to keep, each teacher received a set of ten books for their classroom, and two teachers received classroom shopping sprees (based on class participation) to get books or other items for their classrooms! We appreciate everyone who helped make this possible - thank you!

Please reach out to angie.nagle@underwoodschool.org with any questions, ideas, or concerns. Thank you!

Calling All Parents & Community Members!

We are excited to announce that we are forming a new Parent-Teacher-Community Organization (PTCO) at Underwood Public School—and we would love for YOU to be a part of it!

Our first meeting will be held on November 4th at 6:00 pm at the Underwood School.

This organization is an opportunity for parents, teachers, staff, and community members to come together to support our students, strengthen our school, and grow our community.

We truly believe that it takes a village to raise and educate our children. When our families, school, and community work together, our students benefit.

💜 Please consider being part of this exciting new organization! Think about how you can support our students, teachers, and community as we work together to build a stronger future for the children of Underwood.
