A Note From Our Principal
Hello Baker Families!
We are into our routines here at school and students are beginning to settle in. We appreciate your partnership as we begin our school year together! Beginning of the year assessments will begin next week and we look forward to sharing this information with you during Fall Conferences.
At Baker Elementary, we use Capturing Kids' Hearts in order to explicitly teach lead worthy character traits. For the month of September, our character trait is Empathy. One student in each grade who showcases this trait consistently will be selected as a Student of the Month towards the end of September!
What is Empathy?
- Empathy is the ability to be aware of, understand, and be sensitive to another person’s feelings. Instead of focusing on how these feelings impact ourselves, empathy motivates us to focus on others and respond with care and compassion.
Why focus on Empathy?
- Empathy builds positive classroom culture. Empathy empowers students to learn to understand each other to build trust and safety in the classroom.
- Empathy strengthens communities. Empathy helps students strengthen their relationships with classmates, other students, and adults at school, and at home.
- Empathy prepares your students to be leaders in their community. The best leaders understand the people they lead and are able to show they care.
It has been an absolute joy to see your children meeting new friends, making green choices, and learning a lot! I am so looking forward to the rest of the school year!
Respectfully,
Mrs. Nast

"Raising Readers-Growing Minds"
"The Not So Secret Ingredient"
Every great recipe has a secret ingredient—something special that makes it memorable. In my house, and most likely yours, the "secret" ingredient is love.
When it comes to helping children become confident readers and writers, the not so secret ingredient is love too!
So, how do we share our love for Literacy with our children?
Children thrive when they see the important adults in their lives celebrating literacy. Whether you're reading a bedtime story, talking about your day, singing songs in the car, writing a grocery list together, or exploring books at the library, you're building the language and literacy skills that last a lifetime.
Reading doesn't have to be perfect or take hours each day. Even 15–20 minutes of reading together can spark imagination, strengthen vocabulary, and create meaningful memories. Asking questions, encouraging your child to tell stories, and showing excitement about learning all help nurture a lifelong love of reading.
This year, we invite every family to be an active partner in your child's literacy journey. Share what you love to read and why you love reading it. Share why you love reading to and with your child(ren). Share memories of your favorite childhood books and authors.
Together, we can create a community where books open doors, words build confidence, and every child discovers the love of reading.
Thank you for being part of the not so secret ingredient that helps our young readers grow. Your encouragement, your time, and your love make all the difference.
We are excited to partner with you on your child(ren)'s reading path. Our role is to walk alongside our educators, students, and families as we mix together all the ingredients (and the not so secret ingredient) involved in creating the recipe for a confident reader.
We'd love to talk more about Literacy at our upcoming Open House!
