Madrona Family Memo
Our Wildcat Motto: Be Responsible, Be Respectful!
Saturday, August 22, 2026
Greetings, Madrona Wildcat Families!
We had an exciting week kicking off with New Student Orientation and Returning Student Schedule Pick-Up, followed by our dedicated staff returning to prepare campus for day one. The first two days of school were filled with bright smiles and nervous anticipation. Returning students reconnected with old friends, while new Wildcats quickly formed warm connections with classmates and teachers alike! Across campus, our staff launched the 2026–27 school year with "Unit Zero" activities, engaging classroom culture-building lessons that allowed students to share their unique interests, get to know their peers, and build a foundation of respect and peer collaboration.
In this edition of our family newsletter, we celebrate our dedicated Madrona PTSA, share important Back to School Night details, and spotlight moments that support our students' academic growth and social development through the len of the Portrait of a Graduate. Also included are school, district and community resources.
Next week, Madrona students will have their first full week of learning! This Tuesday, August 25. we will observe our weekly Tuesday Late Start Schedule with a 9:20 am Period 1 start time. Tuesday Late Start provides our teachers with the time needed for instructional collaboration. Our main gates off El Dorado Street will be opened at 8:15 am for supervised study hall from 8:15 am to 9:00 am in the Cafeteria.
Have a wonderful weekend!
With gratitude,
Sue S. Key, Ed.D., Proud Principal
Madrona Middle School

Madrona's Portrait of A Graduate Weekly Spotlight
Students in Ms. Clarke's 6th Grade Social Studies class enjoyed getting to know their teacher and classmates while previewing the exciting historical journeys ahead this year!
Mrs. Miskimen's 6th Grade Science students teamed up to tackle the "impossible" challenge of fitting a whole person through a single index card! Through this hands-on STEM activity, students embraced a growth mindset and learned that missteps are a natural part of inventing creative solutions.
Across campus, students made the most of their snack and lunch breaks - reconnecting with friends and building new friendships!
PE Uniforms & Online Ordering
For families who would like to purchase a uniform featuring our school logo - the online store is open! This uniform order is optional. Orders will be fulfilled in 2-week batches during August and September and Items will be delivered to PE classes in labeled bags.
Note: Students enrolled in a Physical Education class are required to wear a red top (t-shirt or sweatshirt) and black bottoms (shorts or sweat pant), socks, and sneakers for PE. This can be any red t shirt and black shorts/sweat pants that appropriate for physical fitness/exercise that your student already has at home.
Keeping Our Wildcats Cool and Safe
Student comfort and well-being are our priorities during warmer late-summer days. We are fortunate that our school location usually brings a breeze across campus! On days when temperatures rise above normal, proactive steps are taken to ensure our students remain safe, cool, and active in healthy ways:
Limiting Outdoor Play and blacktop use during peak heat hours. Cool, indoor spaces provide welcome shelter during snack and lunch.
Prioritizing Hydration: Encouraging students to refill their water bottles and taking frequent water breaks throughout the day.
Attentive Care: Monitoring students closely for signs of heat sensitivity and adjusting schedules as needed.
Following Expert Guidance: Adhering directly to LA County Department of Public Health & TUSD heat safety guidelines.
How You Can Help at Home Please help us prepare your student for warm days by reminding them to:
Wear light-colored, breathable clothing (cotton and linen).
Bring a refillable water bottle every day - students can replenish them anytime using water bottle refill stations above the water fountains.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership in keeping our Wildcats safe, healthy, and ready to learn!
Calling all 8th-grade Artists!
Return to the Wildcat Den to Support Madrona Orientation & Teachers!
Torrance High School Tartar Knights & Ladies (Madrona Alumni) not only volunteered to pass out student schedules during orientation, they returned two days before school started to assist their former teachers with classroom set-up! Thank you, Tartar Knights & Ladies! Once a Wildcat, Always a Wildcat!
