GT AcademyNewsletterAugust / September 2018
Sablatura GT Academy students have settled in for an exciting 2018-2019 school year! Fifth graders have mastered their lockers and are learning how to be responsible, independent middle school students. Sixth graders are applying the organization skills they learned in fifth grade to help them manage their schedules. Take a look at "Tips for a Successful Year" in this newsletter for a few helpful ideas.

Take a walk down the GTA hallway, and you will see and hear students excited about learning. Sixth graders are learning to apply the Depth and Complexity icons in World Cultures. Melanie, a sixth grader, says "We had the best time learning about landforms. We researched landforms using the icons Unanswered Questions and Over Time. We then wrote intriguing higher-level questions. After that, we had a wonderful time making models of volcanoes, atolls, straits, isthmus, peninsulas and fjords out of play dough. When we finished creating, we had a gallery walk to observe other students' work and answer the questions they wrote. The models looked amazing and we had the best time. "

GTA Math classes use the flipped classroom approach. Students are introduced to new concepts through short videos watched at home. They are expected to follow along and take notes while watching the video at home, and then discuss and apply the concept in class with their classmates and teacher. The videos can be watched several times, which can be helpful when preparing for an upcoming test or project. Parents - take a look at the links below for an overview of the flipped classroom and also quick look at ALEKS.

We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning, growing, and new experiences. Middle school is a time for students to become more independent as they develop study skills, as well as time management, organization, communication skills and friendships. Students are reminded to choose a growth mindset and show their grit when things get difficult.

Come to class prepared.

  • Come to school everyday with at least three sharpened pencils, papers in the correct folders and a good attitude.
  • Most teachers post reminders at their door to tell you what other supplies you will need (book, notebook, device, etc.)
  • Remember, a due date is when the assignment must be turned in. A zero is recorded in the gradebook if the assignment is not turned in that day. This is why keeping up with an updated agenda is so important!
  • Graded papers go home on Thursdays. Leave graded papers at home and return your signed conduct card on Friday. Make corrections and turn them in by Monday.

Get involved.

Club meetings are underway! Students are involved in Quiz Bowl, FPS, Robotics, Book Club, PAWS, TMSCA, Peer Buddies, Running Club, and many more. Getting involved in a club is a great way to meet new friends, work on collaboration skills, and learn something new.

It's also important to get involved in class. Joining in on class discussions makes learning something new more meaningful. Remember to give yourself "think time" before responding. Sometimes the best ideas come from listening to others.

Get organized.

Finding a system of organization that works for you is key to success in middle school. Remember to:

  • File papers in the correct folder in your binder. Remember OHIO - Only Handle It Once. This means don't just shove those papers anywhere. Take the time to put them where they belong the first time.
  • Record homework and due dates in your agenda. You have a lot to remember now. Don't just rely on your memory. Write it down - then look at it when you get home.
  • Use class time wisely. Students who develop this skill have much less (sometimes none at all) homework than those who waste time.
  • You will have several big projects this year. Pay attention to due dates and chunk the big projects into smaller parts so you are not doing it all at the last minute. That's way too stressful!

Use tech responsibly.

GTA students use tech everyday, whether it is posting an assignment and communicating through Edmodo, collaborating with classmates in Office 365, taking a quiz through Socrative, Quizlet, or No Red Ink, researching, watching a math video, or working on a multi media project. Students are expected to be respectful when using their devices, and those unable to follow the acceptable use policy will have their devices taken up. Sixth grade students have recently been reminded about the importance of being kind on social media. If you wouldn't say it to someone face to face, don't post it.

Know your school.

During Camp Grizzly, students took a tour of the campus. It is important to know where to go to look for missing items, how to put money in your lunch account, when to turn in library books, and where the nurse, assistant principal, Mrs. Mueller, and counselors offices are. Listening to morning announcements every day is one way to keep up with what's going on around Sab.

Communicate with your teachers.

The GTA hallway is busy every morning, even before the bell rings! Students come in as early as 7:45 to get extra help and work on projects. Some clubs, including TMSCA, Book Club, Coding and Chess also meet in the mornings.

If you are struggling with an assignment or have a concern, let your teachers know. Ask questions. They are happy to help. All teachers answer emails, and most also communicate through Edmodo or Remind.

Exploring Interests in Mini Courses Exploring Interests in Mini Courses

Mini Courses are a favorite part of the day for many GTA students, for sure. Students are given the opportunity to explore interests that might not usually be covered in traditional lessons. On October 11th, we will have our first field experience day of the year. On this day, students will be immersed in their mini course content for the entire day. Thanks to a generous donation from GTAB, Neuroscience students will travel to the Houston Health Museum to dissect sheep brains and the students in the Anatomy course will dissect cow eyes at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Maas Nursery in Seabrook is the field experience location for the Horticulture course, where students will tour the nursery and learn from experts. Our Techies will join our Rocket Scientists and travel to Space Center Houston to extend their learning. Our Community Outreach group is planning the Socktober campaign and Junk Box Wars students will spend the day engineering Rube Goldberg contraptions. Math in Art and Scrapbooking students will be treated to a special art lesson by a beloved guest teacher, while the GTA Spy Academy and Robotics will spend the day perfecting their crafts. It's going to be a fantastic day of learning!

Students

Fifth graders learned about how our brains learn and remember. "I'm Smart, Now What" taught them how neurons work and that skills must be practiced to be mastered.Sixth graders learned about "The Ultimate Selfie" and what it means to give back to their community and the importance of developing a growth mindset.

Parents

Perfectionism was the topic of discussion for the parent session. Mrs. Van Gemert discussed several faces of perfectionism, including the Academic Achiever, Risk Evader, Controlling Image Manager, and Procrastinating Perfectionist.

Teachers

The Gifted Guru also spent time with the GTA teachers. They discussed ways to use the Depth and Complexity icons with students. Thank you to the awesome parent volunteers that covered our classes so that the teachers could meet with Mrs. Van Gemert!

Congratulations Mrs. Needler!

Mrs. Needler was named Conoco-Phillips Math Teacher of the Year! Orbit came to visit Sab again to announce that she is the winner and gets to fly to Florida to attend Astros spring training! The awesome PJHW band, came to celebrate with us! Most of theses students had Mrs. Needler as a math teacher at the GT Academy.
