West Point El. Parent Update
Week of November 10, 2024
Dear West Point Families,
We would like to congratulate all of our Reflections participants and award winners who were recognized last Thursday evening. 57 entries were submitted in 7 different categories. 41 students received awards, and 30 students received the Award of Excellence, which moves them to the next level of competition. Thank you to our PTA and especially to Christie Maxfield for a fun awards night. We were able to celebrate our students' individuality and creativity, and they had a great time!
We would like to wish a Happy Veterans Day on Monday to all of the veterans in our families and school community. Thank you for your service to our country!
Here are three important things to know for the coming week.
- Please help your students remember to bring warm coats and winter clothing each day. Our weather is quickly changing, and students need to be prepared to be outside in cold weather.
- Thank you for helping your students earn their attendance and reading brag tags. We went up from 76% in September to 78% of our students earning their attendance brag tags in October! Thank you for your support! Many students have submitted their Excellence Project ideas. If your student isn't sure what to do, please communicate with your student's teacher, and he/she can give you some great ideas about what other students are doing and what could work for your child.
- Yearbooks can be purchased on myDSD. They cost $15.00 through December 31. Prices go up to $18.00 starting January 1.
We hope you have a wonderful week. Every day is a great day to be a Wildcat!
Sincerely,
Marjorie Conrad and Christie Bouy

Thank You, Veterans!
11 Ways to Thank a Veteran - From our DSD Military Support Team
- Simply introduce yourself and share your appreciation. A sincere, “Thank you for your service,” is always appreciated.
- Know a veteran? Call them and check-in. Let them know you’re thinking about them and are grateful for all they have done.
- Don’t know what to do with your leftover Halloween candy? Send it to our troops overseas via Operation Shoebox.
- Donate to a veteran’s organization. Here is a great resource: Military Families Needs List.
- Visit a retirement home and ask veterans to share their stories. Listening helps us learn and pass on the history to future generations.
- If you see a veteran out to dinner or at a coffee house, pay for their drink or buy them dessert.
- Help out a military family in need. If you know one, volunteer to help out when you can. Shovel a driveway or deliver a home-cooked meal. Sharing your appreciation with the family of someone deployed can help make their day a bit easier.
- Did you know Nearly 40% of veterans are 65 years or older? Give a veteran your phone number so they can call if they need something, (i.e., a ride to the doctor, help around the house, someone to talk to).
- Attend an “Operation Welcome Home” event. Operation Welcome Home MD (OWHMD) averages about four welcome home events each week. So, grab some friends and head to the airport to clap and cheer as Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guard service members arrive home from serving.
- Can’t make it to the airport? OWHMD is always in need of anonymous, handmade Thank You cards as well. Just a simple, “Thank You for your Service & Welcome Home,” can make a positive impact. These cards can be mailed to:

Experience the Magic
Magical Manners
In honor of World Kindness Day on Wednesday, November 13, this week's manner is, "Keep Unkind Thoughts to Yourself." We all have several thoughts that go through our minds each day, but not all of them need to be shared. 💭 As we are careful with our words, we can make the world a better place. It will also be easier to make and keep friends when our friends know they can trust us to be kind, respectful, and caring.

November's LETTERING Focus - G is for Gratitude
This month we are focusing on Gratitude. Gratitude includes being thankful and showing appreciation by using kind words or doing a kind deed in return. Students have had the opportunity to practice gratitude each day.
From health.harvard.edu, "In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships."
November Brag Tags
Please encourage your students to earn their November brag tags! Students can earn a brag tag if they have 0-1 absences for the month. They earn their reading brag tag by reading at home at least 18 days during the month.
WPE Christmas Ball
Our students get the opportunity to go to the ball this December! Our Christmas Ball will be a pretty awesome Glow Dance Party! As students complete behavior challenges over the month, they will move the hands of the clock back to midnight. They will earn the ball and will then earn glow-in-the-dark accessories, etc. to use at the dance. We are looking forward to a magical time!
