A Note From Superintendent Conroy
Dear St. Johnsbury School District Community,
The 2025–26 school year is off to a strong and positive start. Our students and staff have returned with energy and enthusiasm, and I am excited to share important updates along with celebrations of the great things happening across our district.
Advocacy & Act 73
A key part of my role as Superintendent is to advocate for the best interests of our students, staff, and families, not only here in St. Johnsbury, but also at the state level. This year, Vermont passed Act 73, a law that will reshape how schools are structured and funded. Because the changes may affect tuitioning and redistricting, our School Board is preparing a public statement to ensure your voices are represented.
Budget Season & Community Input
Closer to home, we are beginning our planning for the 2026–2027 (FY2027) school budget. Your input is essential as we work to ensure a budget that supports every St. Johnsbury student, from PreK through grade 12.
Celebrations & District Highlights
While there is important work ahead, there is also much to celebrate. Here are just a few highlights that reflect the dedication of our staff and the strength of our community partnerships.
This summer, our CatCH Fire and Little Sparks programs gave students weeks of hands-on learning, enrichment activities, and field trips, culminating in a joyful Field Day and Showcase event. We also expanded Little Sparks to three classrooms this year, ensuring that more of our youngest learners are supported as they begin their educational journeys. These programs are possible thanks to the dedication of our staff, the generosity of our community partners, and the grant funding that sustains the majority of programming and staffing.
I am proud to share that the Vermont Department of Health has recognized our district with the Gold-Level Governor’s Excellence in Worksite Wellness Award, the highest honor available. This recognition reflects the strength of our wellness programs and the outstanding leadership of our Wellness Team, who are making St. Johnsbury a healthier and more supportive place for students and staff alike.
Finally, I would like to wish Peter VanStraten well following his recent resignation from the School Board and sincerely thank him for his many years of dedicated service and leadership in support of our students and community. At the same time, I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to Joseph Achilles, the newest member of our School Board. Joseph brings a wealth of experience in education and a deep connection to our community, and we are excited for the perspective and leadership he will add to the Board’s important work.
Looking Ahead
Later this year, we will begin preparing for our next five-year strategic plan, as our current plan concludes at the end of next school year. This work will involve meaningful engagement with students, families, staff, and community members. Please watch for more information this spring about opportunities to participate and help shape our district’s vision for the future.
As we move forward together, I invite you to stay connected, share your input on Act 73 and the FY2027 budget, and help us celebrate the incredible learning and growth happening every day in our school. Together, we are building a strong future for every student in St. Johnsbury.
Sincerely,
Karen E. Conroy

Mobile Dental Unit Returns to St. Johnsbury School

This fall, 75 St. Johnsbury School students are already scheduled to receive care through the program. To participate, students must have completed registration, medical, consent, and insurance forms with guardian approval.
This initiative is part of the school’s broader health efforts, led by the Health Services Department and spearheaded by School Nurse Katherine Siner. In addition to dental care, Nurse Siner has coordinated another valuable community partnership: Shippee Family Eyecare will provide student vision screenings on November 19th, exclusively for St. Johnsbury School. St. Johnsbury School Board’s Draft Statement (as of 09/15/25)
"The St. Johnsbury School Board is deeply invested in the necessary conversation at the state level regarding the transformation of Vermont's public education system. Vermonters must be able to afford to live in our thriving communities with access to quality education. We are hopeful legislative action will support this outcome and emphasize the need for such action to be based on real and relevant data.
As a community, St. Johnsbury consolidated into our current school district over 20 years ago, and we empathize with many of our neighbors who are having difficult conversations today. We believe our district’s current model (operating K-8 with choice for high school) is the best long-term approach for our community, provided our students continue to have access to a range of high school options including independent schools like the St. Johnsbury Academy and Lyndon Institute. We are closely watching the Taskforce’s progress and will continue engaging with local and regional leaders. We look forward to reacting to the Taskforce’s draft proposals as soon as they are shared."
