Power of Thought

Two masterclasses at atelier Fiberfusing with mix-media artist Glenys Mann from Australia. Secrets and Messages will look at getting to the essence of an idea and ways of achieving clarity in your work. In Books, Markers, Serendipities you will bundle your feelings in a kind of book.

Secrets and Messages 22-23 October 2014

There are times when we want to work with issues that are meaningful to us, but it is difficult to get distanced enough from that work to make a convincing piece of art. When this happens the work may be seen as sentimental or having too much ‘content’ making the viewer into an unwilling voyeur. Editing is an important part of being an artist. This project will look at getting to the essence of an idea and ways of achieving clarity in your work.

8-10 pieces will be produces that contain secrets and messages for the environment that is close to you. Think about pockets for secrets, messages written in code, think about both sides of the pieces.

These pieces will be no larger than 10cm x 30cms

Use the rusting technique on paper and cloth, collage and stitch.

Books, Markers, Serendipities! 24-25 October 2014

We read we write we learn we share.. books are extraordinary things that come in so many shapes and forms, which influence us in so many ways. They are vehicles that take us to the other worlds, allow us to listen to other voices , other ideas. They offer a space to record our own thoughts, experiences and histories. The world of textiles has its own particular books.. sample books, swatch books, needle books, pattern books, those readings that have informed and shaped our ideas. Which books might those have been, that formed our view of the world and how to make sense of it? Were they novels or swatchbooks? Dairies, encyclopedia, or needle and thread? Classical literature, photo albums or perhaps….?

Books that sample, explore, map, contain stitching, inscriptions etc.

We will construct a book that is not really a book. A diary with leaves not quite open to be read. A book of fragile hours., an intimate earth diary.. an ancient volume of text. or a tracery of consciousness... a palimpsest of little marks and stains.

This book is to be a book that comes from your feelings of the ‘Secrets and Messages’ project.

Any shape, any size! Can be paper or cloth.

All workshops are being teached in Dutch and/or English. We will serve fresh coffee and homemade lunches, with healthy salades, warm dishes, farmers bread and several Dutch cheeses.
