Welcome Back to the New School Year-2026/2027

Dear Students and Families,

It is with great excitement and a warm heart that I welcome you all back to Park Elementary for the upcoming school year. There is a unique energy that fills our hallways as we prepare to transition from the quiet of summer to the vibrant, bustling activity of learning and discovery. Our teachers and staff have been working tirelessly to create an environment that is not only academically rigorous but also safe, inclusive, and inspiring. Whether you are a returning family or joining our community for the first time, please know that you are a vital part of our school’s story, and we have missed the curiosity and joy that you bring to our campus every day.

As we embark on this new journey together, our primary focus remains the growth and well-being of every student. We believe that a strong partnership between home and school is the foundation of student success, and we encourage you to stay engaged and communicative as we navigate the year ahead. We are committed to fostering a culture of excellence where every child feels empowered to take risks, explore new interests, and achieve their full potential. We look forward to a year filled with meaningful milestones, collaborative learning, and shared celebrations. Welcome back and we will see the first grade through third grade students on August 19th. We will welcome each kindergartener at their scheduled screening time.

Warmly,

Mrs. Donna Picone
Principal at Park Elementary

Back-to-School Health & Wellness Newsletter

With the new school year upon us, it's a great time to focus on preparing for a healthy and successful academic year. This newsletter offers valuable insights and tips to support your child's well-being as he or she starts off the new school year!

Here are some general back to school reminders:

1. Get those back-to-school checkups and vaccinations up to date

  • Annual physicals are important for children of all ages to track their growth and development, identify potential health concerns early, and ensure they are up to date on necessary immunizations.
  • Your healthcare provider can address any health concerns and ensure your child is ready to participate in school and extracurricular activities.
  • Consult the recommended childhood and adolescent immunization schedules to ensure your child is protected against preventable diseases, according to the CDC.

2. Promote healthy routines and habits

  • Establish a consistent sleep schedule: Adequate sleep is crucial for cognitive function, physical health, and emotional well-being. Aim for 9-12 hours of sleep for younger children and 8-10 for teenagers.
  • Encourage regular physical activity: Children should aim for 60 minutes of physical activity daily, says the CDC. This can include playing sports, recess, or simply being active outside.
  • Prioritize a balanced diet: Good nutrition fuels the brain and body. Start the day with a nutritious breakfast and pack healthy lunches and snacks.
  • Reinforce good hygiene practices: Handwashing with soap and water is essential to prevent the spread of germs. Remind children to wash their hands before eating, after using the restroom, and after coughing or sneezing.

3. Prioritize mental and emotional well-being

  • Talk about feelings: The start of a new school year can be exciting but also a big change for children (and adults!). Create an open environment where your child feels comfortable discussing their emotions and concerns.
  • Practice stress management techniques: Teach your child deep breathing exercises or the importance of taking breaks when feeling overwhelmed.
  • Limit screen time: Excessive screen use can interfere with sleep and overall well-being. Encourage a balanced approach to screen time and prioritize other activities.

4. Safety first

  • Review backpack safety: Ensure your child uses a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and wears both straps to distribute the weight evenly. The weight of the backpack should ideally be no more than 10-20% of the child's body weight, says the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons AAOS.
  • Emphasize pedestrian and bus safety: Remind children to look both ways before crossing the street, use designated crosswalks, and avoid distractions while walking or waiting for the bus. Teach them to stand away from the curb and remain seated while on the bus.

5. Staying connected and informed

  • Communicate with teachers and school staff to stay informed about your child's progress and any concerns.
  • Stay up-to-date on school health policies and procedures.

Here are some Elementary Clinic tips we would like to convey at the start of the year pertinent to our Chardon elementary clinics:

~If your child needs medication at school, an order from the health care provider must be provided with the medication together to start administering the medication at school. These forms are on the Chardon Local School District Website under Health Services. You can also call and we can print these for you if needed.

~Please ensure that someone is always available to take a phone call and/or on call to pick up a child or receive a phone call in the event that a student becomes sick or injured at school. This does not mean that every call will warrant a child being picked up, but we do try to communicate most clinic visits whether by means of phone call or email (depending on the nature of visit). It is challenging when we are unable to reach someone and the issue is time-sensitive to communicate.

~immunization information must be provided before the 14th day of school in order to avoid exclusion from school. We will also reach out if your child is missing necessary vaccines or paperwork to show that these have been completed.

~PLEASE send your child with an extra full set of clothing daily in his/her backpack at ALL grade levels (K-3rd). We do not have extra clothes to supply and would not prefer to store clothes in our clinic. Kids can also be specific on what they will wear so this extra set of clothes really helps and also provides comfort to them.

~Please include our health team (Sarah Park and Renee Kolenich) on any health-related concerns or messaging to the school. For example, sometimes parents/guardians will message the teacher directly regarding something a child is experiencing health-wise, but it is most effective to include the teacher and clinic team so we can all be included in the child's daily needs.

By taking these proactive steps, we can work together to ensure a healthy, happy, and successful school year for your child. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's health, please don't hesitate to contact our clinic. We are here to support your family's health and well-being!!

Sincerely,

Sarah Park RN and Renee Kolenich MA
