Principal's Notes
This week has been busy here at Cole School with the Norwell CARES Day and Open House/Curriculum Night both falling on Thursday. Norwell CARES Day was a great success! The Sophomores participated in Tens Around Town and completed various projects around the community. At Cole, they helped with the landscaping along with some parent volunteers and JMF Landscaping. The Juniors participated in Juniors to Juniors and worked in almost all of the classrooms today with students. They enjoyed recess and lunchtime with the kids as well. We also enjoyed seeing so many families for the Open House/Curriculum Night. The students were so proud to introduce their families to their teacher and friends. We hope you learned a lot about how your child spends their day at Cole School! What a great day for the entire community!
REMINDER - Students will be sent home by bus as the default plan unless a parent makes a change in Pick Up Patrol. If your child is going to a Rec Program, the Y program, or any other after school activity within the Cole School building like Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, you MUST let the school know through the Pick Up Patrol app (pickuppatrol.net). Please reach out to Mrs. Festa if you need any assistance with this.
The installation for the new climber on the playground has been delayed until Saturday, October 3rd due to the upcoming inclement weather this weekend. Stay safe!
Congratulations to both Sara Lipsett and Katie Crawford on becoming the two new parent representatives for Cole School's School Council. We appreciate them stepping forward for the role.
If you have any old soccer balls laying around that you'd like to donate to Cole School, we'll take them! We are always on the look out for gently used playground balls. Donations can be dropped off at the office.
NEW THIS YEAR: All students will have lunch on early release days this year. The cafeteria will offer lunch options on these days. Our first early release is Friday, October 9th. Two grade levels will be eating at the same time following this schedule:
Grades 4 and 5 10:30-10:55
Grades 1 and 3 11:05-11:30
Grades K and 2 11:35-12:00
We had a very successful parent book group two years ago when we read The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. We have decided to host another parent book group this year. Please see the invitation below and RSVP if you'd like to join me in discussing Isabelle Hau's book, Love to Learn.
Magnificent Meerkats
We had a very big group of Magnificent Meerkats this week! Thank you to the many students who are shining brightly and showing expected behaviors consistently around the building. Ask your child what some of the expected behaviors are for the various areas (cafeteria, bathrooms, hallways, classrooms, bus, etc). I am hopeful that they will be able to tell you what the adults are looking for in each of these areas.

This week, students continued learning about Growth Mindset and Goal Setting in Second Step lessons. You can read more about what your students are learning and find questions to ask them at home, by opening the Second Step Home Links on my website. Also, in the next few weeks, students and teachers will complete SAEBRS screeners, which provides us a snapshot of how the kids are feeling about themselves socially, academically, and emotionally at school. We'll use those data to form small groups for social-emotional skill building. Please reach out with any questions or if your student needs support- anne.walsh@norwellschools.org
