Hello Arleta Parents and Caregivers!
I hope you’ve all been well and enjoying summer! School is just around the corner, and I hope your child is feeling excited.
This year we celebrate some great growth in academic outcomes: significant gains on state math, literacy, and attendance measures! We’ll continue our focus on clarity and alignment, ensuring students know what they’re learning, why it matters, and what they’re expected to do to demonstrate their understanding.
You’ll be able to see your child’s teacher assignment tomorrow August 21st in ParentVue, an app that schools use to facilitate communication between teachers and parents/guardians, distribute class lists and report cards, track attedance, share calendars and so much more. Nicole will send a message via ParentSquare to let you know to check ParentVue.
New families: ParentVue is a secure app you’ll want to download for tracking attendance and grades and completing yearly data verification. Please call the office for assistance if needed: 503.916.6330. ParentSquare is our app for sharing school information with families. Here’s the link to ParentSquare guidance.
Our Arleta Family Handbook contains all kinds of important information, including arrival and dismissal procedures, our PPS cell phone and smartwatch policy, and reminders about no toys at school and no dogs on our school grounds (perimeter only).
This year we have some shifts in which teachers will teach which grade levels, as well as our shift to multiage learning in grades 1/2 and 4/5. The Arleta PTA is recruiting a team of parent volunteers to assist teachers with this transition, and you can fill out a form to be part of that, here.
Here is our 2026–2027 Classroom Teacher Staff!
- Kindergarten: Haley Jacobs (Ms. Haley) and Katherine Tomic (Teacher Katherine)!
- 1st & 2nd Grade Multiage: Karin Hedlund (Ms. Hedlund), Maggie Overlund (Ms. Maggie), Karen Williams (Ms. Williams)!
- 3rd Grade: Jessica Doyle (Ms. Doyle), Joanne Havran (Ms. Havran)!
- 3rd, 4th & 5th Grade SES: new staff member is in the hiring process!
- 4th & 5th Grade Multiage: Jackie Bidney, Kyle Cooke, Noah Johnson-Greenough
Our teacher teams worked together to create balanced learning environments within each grade band or level, with input from specialists and support staff. We considered many factors in creating classrooms where students can learn and thrive, including academic achievement, race, age (the number of younger students vs. older students within a grade), ELD and Special Education services, learning styles, gender, students who are new to our school, and more. We pay particular attention to patterns in our data and to factors that can create inequitable experiences or outcomes for students.
Teachers will be sending all students in their new class a letter home via US Mail that you should receive by Monday, August 24. Please make sure you’ve updated your address in ParentVue if needed!
As school begins, our staff will be reaching out to connect with you—to learn your hopes for your child and, just as importantly, to learn from all you know about your child’s strengths, interests, needs, and ways of learning. You know your child in ways we don’t yet, and we want to listen and learn from you.
We ask all parents to say goodbye to your children outside the school doors and let them walk in on their own. We understand it feels like a challenging request; please know that while your child may seem reluctant or anxious outside, they are generally doing well within seconds of being inside as our staff envelop them with warmth and help them to class throughout the first weeks and, truly, all year.
We can’t wait to see our 1st through 5th graders coming in with the 7:53 bell Wednesday morning, August 26! Please remember students should be in their classroom ready to learn by 8:00 a.m. sharp, so they should arrive between 7:53–7:55, or at 7:45 for breakfast in the cafeteria (breakfast and lunch are again free to all PPS students).
Kindergarten families, you’ll have a 1:1 meeting with your child and their teacher that same Wednesday. You’ll hear from your child’s teacher or our office at the end of next week to schedule that meeting and learn your child’s “Soft Start” Day—either Thursday the 27th or Friday the 28th. Only half the class comes to school for a full day of school each of those days; your child stays home the other day.
Thank you for your partnership and your support, and cheers to a great year ahead!
Warmly,
Lisa
GET READY FOR SCHOOL!
*The Bus Schedule is still subject to change, so check back frequently (or check it closer to August 26th) to make sure that the relevant corners and times have not changed a bit in the interim!
FIND OUT YOUR CHILD'S CLASS IN KONSTELLA
As soon as class lists are released, officially tomorrow, Friday August 21st, Lisa Hugelier will update the class lists in Konstella. IMPORTANT MILESTONES IN THE ARLETA YEAR
If you're new to Arleta School this year: welcome! We're so glad you're part of our community. We've put together a handy list of things that happen throughout the year, to help you get oriented. Please know that any dates given may be subject to change.
Dolphin Dash - October 2
This is our annual fundraiser for the arts and PE classes, as well as assemblies that the school has throughout the year. It's a really important event and makes a huge contribution to the quality of education our children receive. Our students get family members and friends to promise donations, and run-or-walk laps around the school to earn them. Parents who can attend come to cheer on the students with signs and noise makers. Students enjoy popsicles afterwards before heading back to class. It's a great way to get exercise and support our education.
Oregon Battle of the Books -Various Dates
Oregon Battle of the Books, or OBOB, is an annual, state-wide competition with three age categories: third-fifth grades, sixth-eighth grades, and ninth-twelfth grades. Students read books from a list of books, form teams, practice, and then compete, panel-show style, to answer questions about the books they read. The winning team goes on to compete in regionals. OBOB registration opens September 1 and closes October 31st this year. Battles will take place after winter break and will be completed by February.
Walk, Bike, Roll To School Day - Oct 6
Walk, Bike, Roll to School Day is a global event that encourages walking and rolling to school on the same day. Arleta supports this event as a way to reduce traffic and pollution, support physical activity and safe routes to school.
Fall Festival - Oct 23
The Fall Festival, is a fun mix of all our favorite fall holidays! There’ll be a dance party, costumes, games, festive decorations, and plenty of snacks. There is also a PTA bake sale fundraiser—so bring a homemade treat if you can and help support our school!
Arleta Movie Nights - Various dates throughout the year
Periodically, we turn on the popcorn maker, project a popular kids movie in the cafeteria, and everyone brings blankets and chairs to watch the movie together. It's a great, chill way to relax together as a community and have fun!
Parent/Teacher Conferences - November 23-24
Parent/Teacher Conferences generally happen in November and sign-ups will go out through the newsletter and apps for slots of time where you can meet with your children's teachers and get down to brass tacks on your child's educational journey. Morning and evening time slots are available. It's a great opportunity to ask questions and to find out more details about your child's experience in class and ways that you can support your kid. Because this makes for some long days for the teachers, the PTA organizes volunteers to bring and set up meals to feed the teachers and keep them going strong. Please know there will be no school that week and video options for families traveling out of town.
Community Care Days - Various Dates Throughout the Year
These are intergenerational volunteering days that happen on a roughly quartlerly basis, to help maintain the school grounds! Our garden is completely volunteer supported, and some of the work on the school grounds like pruning and spreading wood chips and picking up litter are done by volunteers. There's usually a fairly large turnout, and many hands make light work, so we hope you'll join us for these events!
Season of Giving - November
This is a donation drive our PTA does every year in partnership with the school counselor to provide holiday resources (food and gift cards) for Arleta school families who need a little help making the holidays bright!
Share-A-Toy-Donation Drive - December
This is a toy donation drive our PTA does in December to help keep toys out of landfills and provide resources for Arleta families who need a little help getting special gifts for their children during the holidays.
Winter Music Concert - December 10
Grades 3-5 put on a magical winter concert for friends and families in the auditorium. Our music teacher, Sean Cunningham, always puts together a fantastic program, and it's so much fun.
Winter Bazaar - Dec 12
The Winter Bazaar is a beloved Arleta event. This special event gives students the chance to sell their handmade crafts to the community — a tradition our kids look forward to every year! Table spots are limited, so if your child would like to participate, be sure to reserve a table and start crafting now. The event will also feature a PTA fundraisers like a bake Sale and an exciting raffle with great prizes.
The Dolphin Drive - Feb 1-28
This is the biggest PTA fundraiser of the year, and lasts a little over a month. The funds support all our fun free events, special student experiences, teacher grants, student yearbooks, and so much more! During this time, you'll get information sent home in packets in your child's backpack on how to make donations. While bake sales and running laps can be fun ways to motivate donations, your Dolphin Drive donation is really the support that you give purely to support good things the PTA puts on throughout your child's school year: arts assemblies, movie nights, affinity groups, field trips, classroom resources. We set a goal each year and track donations through drive so that you can help us reach our goal.
The First Grade Parade - April
Every year, Arleta first graders transform shoe boxes and jar lids into parade floats, decorated with objects from their cultural backgrounds. The whole school turns out to watch the first graders, escorted by the Portland Rosarians, and accompanied by the Kellogg Middle School band, as they parade around the school grounds showing off their creations! This is a really beloved school tradition.
Spring Music Concert - April 15
This concert includes grades K-2 as they charm friends and families with all that they learned through the dedicated efforts of our music teacher, Sean Cunningham.
Teacher Appreciation Week - May 3-7
This is a national week of appreciation for teachers and the PTA always tries to push the boat out for teachers this week, complete with potlucks, dessert tables, and gift bags. This takes a lot of volunteer involvement and we hope you will join us. Our teachers work so hard and it feels good to give them treats!
School Play - May 20-21
Parent volunteers help the children put together an amazing school play every year. Auditions are often in January and weekly rehearsals afterschool lead up to the May performances. It's always a lot of fun, both the be part of, and to watch!
Arts and Literacy Night - Spring
Each year the school puts on an event that includes gallery-style showings of student artwork from the past year, as well as literacy games and crafts for all the attendees. Last year also involved a book fair and bingo. This is a wonderful way to support your proud Arleta student and see what they've been learning.
End-of-the-Year Jamboree - June 4
The End-of-the-Year Jamboree is a fun-filled celebration to wrap up the school year. This annual event brings together students, families, and staff for an unforgettable afternoon of community and fun. With hotdogs, cold drinks, treats, karaoke, bounce houses, temporary tattoos, and yard games. It’s the perfect way to relax, have fun, and celebrate the end of a great school year!
This is not every event of significance throughout the year, but gives a picture of the broader shape of an Arleta School Year and also hopefully gives you some heads-up about joining in the fun!

NEW STUDENT-CREATED FENCE ART INSTALLATION
We’re so excited to see the students’ artwork come to life and become a permanent part of our school community! The Arts Committee is excited to announce the initial beginning of our Dolphin Fence Art Installation!
The student artwork created during the Spring 2026 Arts & Literacy Night will be installed along the fence over the next few weeks, helping to beautify our school and create a vibrant, welcoming community space.
This project is made possible by Alessio, Dominco, and Luna's grandpa, Scott Conahan, who is donating over $20,000 in labor to make this art installation a reality!
A BIG COMMUNITY CARE THANK YOU!
Thank you to everyone who came to Community Care Day on 2026. We had a small, steady stream of devoted helpers, little and big, who put in many hours of hard work on the 15th and it shows! Lots of new mulch and significantly less weeds, pine needles, trash, and trees of heaven. Please keep an eye out for our fall Community Care Day.

Volunteers meet on the first Fridays of the month 2:30-3pm. Many thanks to Savannah Dombeck for leading this group of do-goodeers!

BACK2SCHOOL NIGHT - SEP 10
Back2School Night is a district-wide event (the events can happen on different days, but each school has them) that is held in order to introduce parents to their students’ new teachers and for parents to get to know a little bit about the teacher, the classroom, and what their children will be learning about. Back2School Night is a good time to ask questions or share your ideas with all/any of our staff.
Arleta's Back2School Night is Thursday, September 10 from 5:30-7pm. From 5:30-6pm we will gather in front of the school and hear opening remarks and welcomes from Principal Lisa and others. From 6pm-7pm parents will go to their child or children's classroom for presentations, a tour of the classroom, and a chance to ask more detailed questions about your kid's learning experience this year!
Each classroom's presentation is a 1/2 hour long, so if you have more than one child (or you arrived late for the presentation) you can switch to a new classroom for the second presentation at 6:30pm!
Please come and meet your teacher(s), learn what your child will be learning this year, and celebrate the new school year with us!
