MAP-Driven Small Groups and the Learning Continuum MAP-Driven Small Groups and the Learning Continuum

Take a deep breath and follow my train of thought here. As a clasroom teacher, I know that my students have different needs. Winter MAP provided me with a breakdown of their specific needs in multiple domains (algebraic thinking and operations, number sense and operations, measurement and data analysis, and geometry). I can group students based on their RIT bands within each of these subgroups. This means that when I look at my class' ATO performance, I have a group of students in the 170s, a group of students in the 180s, and a group of students in the 190s. These groups need different things that may be beyond the scope of my grade level.

This is where small groups comes into play. While students are working on DreamBox, I can commit to pulling each of these different small groups in 10 minute chunks a few times a week. When I think about what each of these groups needs, I can CLICK HERE to open a document telling me which standards students need within their specific RIT band (i.e. 170s ATO has 19 standards that are part of that RIT band). I know my students best in terms of which standards are high-leverage and if they are in need of gap filling lessons or enrichment lessons. I also know that I have an instructional coach who can help me decide which of these many standards to focus on. I also know that as a teacher in Rock Hill Schools, I am able to access slides for ALL grade levels. I can go to the Math Master course on Canvas, open up the slides, and use the activities for my groups.

Now take another deep breath. My goal is to be realsitic and impactful as a coach. As a teacher managing multiple subjects and multiple small groups, it's a lot. Using MAP data and the document linked above is a way to leverage your data and resources to plan small groups. I met with second and third grade teachers this week regarding this process. You can CLICK HERE to open a template we created to track how you can meet with groups a few times a week while other students are on DreamBox. Let me know if you want me to walk through this process with you or your team!

Math Orders Through Tanner Math Orders Through Tanner

I asked for ideas to help spend our $15,000 math refresh money a few weeks ago. If you and your grade level submitted ideas, please know that they have been ordered. All items from Amazon and Lakeshore have arrived and have been delivered. Thank you for your help with this order!

MAP Scores on DreamBox MAP Scores on DreamBox

All MAP scores have been input in DreamBox. If I were you, I would encourage my students to look for lessons that have a blue calendar icon in the corner. These lessons are specficially related to a student's winter math MAP score. See the picture below if you're not sure what I'm talking about. All other lessons are based on a student's personalized DreamBox learning pathway.

Q3 Instructional Slides Update Q3 Instructional Slides Update

Math coaches have been creating instructional slides for all standards. The goal is for these slides to be student-facing to help make sure you are teaching to the level of the standard and not over or under teaching. These slides are aligned to learning targets and common assessments and include material lists, teacher notes for instructional delivery, mini-lesson slides, independent practice activities, and debrief questions. These are a great starting point for you as you plan.

All Q3 slides are published with the exception of:

  • K.G.4 (7 instructional days) - Katie Sidney Creating Now
  • 1.MDA.3 (3 instructional days)
  • 3.MDA.1 (5 instructional days) - Tanner Slagle Creating Now
  • 4.MDA.4 (5 instructional days)
  • 5.NSF.8 (7 instructional days) - Chanda Church Creating Now
