This Week's Learning This Week's Learning

Reading

As we continue Unit 2 and our understanding of poetry, students will analyze poems for figurative language, mood/tone, point of view, and structure. They will include these elements into their own poetry drafts as well.

Writing

Students will be comparing and contrasting poems while using the elements of poetry to write, edit, draft and publish their figurative language poem.

Math

This week in math, students will continue dividing decimals using models to build understanding and connecting those models to the standard algorithm.

Social Studies

Students will continue to learn about the key events that led to the American Revolution, including the French and Indian War, colonial responses to taxation, and rising tensions between the colonies and Great Britain. Students will also explore the important ideas in the Declaration of Independence and summarize the outcomes of the American Revolution that led to the establishment of the United States.

Science

This week, we are exploring forces and motion! Students will investigate how balanced and unbalanced forces affect an object’s movement, including how pushes and pulls can make objects start, stop, speed up, slow down, or change direction. Through hands-on investigations, videos, and a PhET simulation, students will observe patterns in motion and use evidence to explain what they discover. We will wrap up the week by applying our learning to real-world examples and explaining our thinking using evidence.

A Note from Dr. Hamilton A Note from Dr. Hamilton

Dear Parents,

I am so excited to share that author Josh Funk will be visiting our school on Wednesday afternoon, October 21st! I am thrilled that he will have the opportunity to meet with our students in Kindergarten through 5th grade.

Josh Funk has written many popular and fun books for children. You can learn more about him and his books on his website: Josh Funk Books.

Neighbor Books, a family-owned bookstore in McKinney, has generously offered to order Josh Funk’s books for our families if you would like to purchase one for your child. Neighbor Books supports children's literacy and authors who visit our local area. I have attached information below that explains the ordering process. *The deadline to place your order is September 30th.

If your family already owns a book written by Josh Funk, you are welcome to send it to the library to be autographed. Please send books to the library by Tuesday, October 20th, so they can be ready for his visit.

Of course, you are welcome to purchase a book through another bookstore or website if you prefer. I simply wanted to share Neighbor Books as an option for our families.

We have many of Josh Funk's books in the SJE library if you would like to stop by and look through them before deciding which book to purchase. I will also be reading his books to our students during library time over the next month to get everyone excited about his visit!

Please let me know if you have any questions. I can't wait for our students to meet Josh Funk and hear from a real author!

Things to Know Things to Know

Healthy Working Snack

If you so desire, your child may bring a healthy snack to be eaten midday (after specials). Our lunch time is 1:10 PM.

  • Students may eat ONE snack-sized snack
  • Please do not send a snack that is messy, requires a utensil, or candy
  • Please avoid sending snacks that leave a lot of residue on fingers
  • We have 'working snacks' and should not extend past 10 minutes.

Dropping Things Off

When items are dropped off to the office, the teachers will send students to retrieve items at our convenience. The front office cannot regulate when the student picks items up as they are protecting our instructional time.

Earbud/Headset Reminders

Please make sure your child comes to school each day prepared with a set of earbuds or headsets. This is a required school supply and they will use them on a regular basis.

Personal Technology

Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, Prosper ISD implemented a comprehensive ban on the use of personal communication devices by students during the school day while on school property. This policy applies to all grade levels and includes:

  • Cell phones
  • Smartwatches
  • Tablets (personal devices)
  • Any other electronic device capable of communication

Dismissal Changes

  • In the event you have a transportation change, please call or email Kimberly White prior to 2:00pm (kdwright@prosper-isd.net). This will notify the front office and the teacher will be made aware of the change.
  • Do not email your teacher due to there not being a guarantee they will get the message in time. Again, all changes must be made through the front office prior to 2:00pm

Absences

  1. Parents should notify the school the morning their child will be absent. All absence notifications and notes must be submitted electronically through Skyward Family Access.
  2. When a student returns from an absence at a doctor's office, a signed doctor’s note displaying the date on which the student was seen in the office must be sent to the school attendance email (johnson-attendance@prosper-isd.net within 2 days of the absence.
  3. If you have general inquires about attendance, you may email our registrar at johnson-registrar@prosper-isd.net
