What are Monthly School Board of Directors' Updates? What are Monthly School Board of Directors' Updates?

As part of the Board of School Directors' communication plan, the School Board of Directors sends monthly updates to the school community. Monthly updates include highlights of school board of directors' community engagement and advocacy efforts, important dates, upcoming school district events, updates on any new policies or changes in policies, financial updates, and information on district resources. These updates aim to keep everyone informed and engaged with the school community. What is the Advocacy Corner?

The Upper Darby School District Board of School Directors believes that all students, regardless of background, economic should have a quality public education and an equal opportunity for success. The Advocacy Corner provides information and resources for parents/guardians with the goal of ensuring that every child has access to the resources and support they deserve through equitable public school funding. Upper Darby School District has historically faced state underfunding while seeing the cost of educating students in Pennsylvania's public schools increasing steadily and an increase in unfunded mandates.

The Office of Management and Budget issued a two-page memo late on Monday instructing all federal agencies to halt federal spending in order to perform a comprehensive analysis to make sure all grant and loan programs are in line with Trump’s executive orders that rollback diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) protections and environmental standards. Adoption of Textbooks-High School Advanced Placement (AP) African American Studies - Board Action Required

Proposal to Pilot - Board Action Required

District administration requested board approval to pilot SmartPass at Upper Darby High School from February through the end of the school year. The presentation covered an overview of the product, the reasons for selecting it over other options, and the cost of the proposed pilot. This item is scheduled for Board action at the February 11, 2025 meeting. Public Hearing Pursuant to School Code §7-780 — Sunsetting of Charles Kelly Elementary School — Board Action Required

A Public Hearing was held for District administration to discuss the sunsetting of Charles Kelly Elementary School. The presentation reviewed the rationale for sunsetting the school, the short-term planning goals, the change in catchment areas, transportation and operations considerations, transition planning, and the timeline. This item is scheduled for Board action at the February 11, 2025 meeting.

District administration has publicly discussed the possible closure of Charles Kelly Elementary School during public meetings held on December 17, 2025 and during a public hearing on January 28, 2025. At this time, the Board of School Directors has asked the Administration to enter into negotiations to extend the lease agreement for Charles Kelly Elementary School for the 2025-2026 school year. The Board will still be considering the option of closing Charles Kelly Elementary School at the conclusion of the 2025-2026 school year on April 29, 2025. Between now and that date, the Board is receiving public comment as part of the record. You may make your comment to the board by sending an email to charleskellyhearing@upperdarbysd.org or by writing a letter that can be delivered to your school principal by your child.

This means, assuming these negotiations are successful, that Charles Kelly Elementary School would remain open for the 2025-2026 school year and any closure would only take place after the end of that school year.

District Administration will still be meeting with members of the community to discuss the possible closing of Charles Kelly Elementary School and the redistricting of students from Charles Kelly Elementary School, Highland Park Elementary School, and Hillcrest Elementary School.
