The History of Juneteenth The History of Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom. This day, now celebrated as Juneteenth, marks a pivotal moment in American history — a moment that reminds us of the ongoing journey toward freedom and justice for all.

Why Juneteenth Matters
Juneteenth is more than a date on the calendar; it is a profound reminder of resilience, liberation, and the continued fight for equity. As a federal holiday, it invites us to reflect on the African American experience and to honor the contributions of the Black community, a lifeline to our nation.

Recognizing Juneteenth is an opportunity to deepen our understanding of history and to acknowledge the struggles and triumphs that have shaped who we are today.

In our school community, we encourage everyone to not only recognize Juneteenth but also to actively learn from its lessons. Let’s use this day as a chance to educate ourselves, uplift marginalized voices, and commit to fostering a more inclusive, empathetic, and united Troy. Because when we acknowledge all history, we honor every voice and every story.

As we honor Pride Month, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a sense of belonging for every member of our school community. Belonging is more than a principle—it’s a practice we strive to embed in every corner of our district. This month and every month, we stand with our LGBTQI+ community, celebrating their contributions and affirming their rights.

Here’s how we can continue to foster environments of belonging:

  • Safe and Brave Spaces: Areas where students can freely express themselves and access support.

  • Counseling Services: Staff equipped with the tools and resources to provide guidance and care.

  • Educational Programs: Curriculum that promotes respect, understanding, and inclusivity.

  • Continued Learning: Ongoing learning and fostering empathy to effectively support all students.

Together, let’s keep building a school environment where every student feels seen, valued, and safe.
