Principal's Update

SES Community,

There have been so many great things happening at Shoreham that I can’t wait to share.

Last week, we had a whole school field trip to Champlain Orchards. It was a beautiful day. Students were able to try different apples and taste the array of flavors. As a school community we realized that honey crisp was our favorite.

Also as a school we connected with the local fire department and learned about fire alarms and fire safety. We were also so lucky to get a tour of a fire truck. Students loved being able to beep the fire truck horn!

Thank You!

Best,

Library Update!

Our School Library is now in its new home. At the end of last year, the library relocated from the back of the school to one of the inner classrooms . The library space was renovated into Mrs. Broughton’s ⅘ classroom and workspace off of the hallway.

All grades have been learning our new routines in our new space. Ask your student about our cozy library.

As families may have seen at the open house, the library is still in process. The students, with grades 4 and 5 doing the majority of the work, are assisting with the setting up of the library this year. It’s an exciting, hands-on exploration of what our library is and can be. We’ve been working on shelving and withdrawing books that no longer fit into the collection. 4th and 5th grade students have just been assigned their library jobs for the next few weeks. These jobs were assigned based on their own interests in the work tasks. If you have a 4th or 5th grader, be sure to ask them about their library work!

3rd graders have also been helping out with shelving books. 1st and 2nd graders have learned a routine to review picture books and are slowly helping to refine that collection. Kindergarteners are learning about how the library is organized and where to find their favorite books.

In the coming weeks and months, students will…

continue to unbox and shelve the collections

make decisions about how to highlight their favorite books

make proposals and decisions about furnishings and decorations about the library

spend a $500 budget to furnish and decorate the library

create labels to help kids find books

design and paint artwork for the library

Classroom Updates

Ms. Jenny’s Class

The 4th and 5th graders in Ms. Jenny’s class have completed the first unit of the year, Who We Are! We made self-portraits and wrote about them. Students thought carefully about all the people, places, and events that have shaped them and given them the traits they express everyday. They represented these ideas visually and wrote about what they created. All of this work is now displayed in our new “gallery” space in what was our library! We can’t wait for you to see it.

The 5th graders in Ms. Jenny’s math class have worked hard to and complete the first unit in Bridges 3 Math! We were thinking about volume and making rectangular prisms as well as composite rectangular prisms. Students recorded their structures as math expressions using parentheses. Our next unit is all about adding and subtracting fractions!

We are excited about the crisp air and looking forward to all the fun activities and traditions that we celebrate during the fall.

Last weekend our 1st and 2nd graders played in the Rutland jamboree. We had 3 teams out of the 30 that played and it was a great day!

This Wednesday is our last practice and next week we end our season with the parents versus kids game on Wednesday.

Reminder:

We have Hip Hop dance and Pom being offered for 2 weeks in November and 2 weeks in December. Please reach out if you would like to sign up your child.

We are getting closer to the line dancing night from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the school gym on 11/13/24.

Have a great weekend everyone!

ACSD Budget Engagment ACSD Budget Engagment

Last week, the ACSD Fall Newsletter shared information about opportunities to engage this budget season. We want to remind you of the information that was shared and the opportunities this week for your feedback.

  • This budget season, ACSD will be working to create a spending plan for FY 26 that protects and preserves the trust of our voters, advances the work of our strategic plan, and honors the values that have led to widespread and historic support of public education within our ACSD community. Read more in Superintendent Baker’s Op-Ed.
  • On October 22nd from 6-7:30pm, ACSD will host community conversations to inform the first draft of our budget. These meetings will be held simultaneously in the MUHS library and at Bridport, Cornwall, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham, and Weybridge schools. You are welcome to join any location.

  • You can also share your thoughts using this survey. Please complete the survey by 9pm on October 22nd. The budget process will last through January, and we'll make sure to prioritize and share other opportunities for community engagement.
