What does coaching as a form of professional development mean? Coaching does the following:
- Nurtures adult learning
- Provides job-embedded professional development
- Links learning about effective practices to real-world application
- Identifies strengths, priorities, and motivations
- Explores ways a coachee would like to enhance their practice
Taking notes during focused observations does not need to be fancy, in fact it can be so simple! Check out some sample note-taking ideas for focused observations.
Having a few helpful phrases handy can really help when you're not sure what to say next. For example:
- "Let's just give it a try."
- "Tell me more about..."
- "What can we do to make this practice easier to implement?"
- "What have you tried so far?"
- "How do you think ___ went today?"
Map it out! Use the action plan as a roadmap for your coaching journey. What practices would your coachee like to work on? What steps are needed to put the targeted practices into place? Breaking new practices into smaller steps can make the process of change less overwhelming.
Am I able to intervene with ease when I hear comments that exclude someone, show bias, or are discriminatory? Do I model ways for responding to bias? Access a Reflection on Culture and Equity Activity as an individual or with other coaches to reflect further on these and other questions.
