SMS Students Leaving Their Mark, Together
The first assembly of the year at Scappoose Middle School was more than just a gathering, it was a powerful reminder of belonging, purpose and the impact every student can make. For the first time this year, students were recognized as Legacy Award winners, honored for embodying the values of kindness, responsibility, friendship, leadership, and positivity that define what it means to be part of the SMS Legacy.
Principal Strachan invited students to reflect on the kind of legacy they hope to leave behind, reminding them that their everyday actions and efforts become part of the school’s story. He drew attention to the composite photos displayed throughout the building, faces of students who once sat in the same bleachers, learning, laughing, and growing since 1931.
As students turned and saw those faces, some familiar, perhaps family or friends, it was a touching, almost timeless moment. In that reflection, they could see themselves not just as students of today, but as part of something much bigger: a tradition of kindness, connection, and community that stretches across generations.
OPE Students Make Math a Little Sweeter
Otto Petersen Elementary students celebrated their hard work in math with a fun and tasty activity, M&M Multiplication! After learning to multiply multi-digit numbers, students put their skills into action using colorful candies to solve problems and check their work. This activity was the perfect way to wrap up the week, adding a sprinkle of fun and a whole lot of learning to their math practice!
SHS Clubs, Connections, and Community!
Scappoose High School was buzzing with excitement this week as students explored all the amazing opportunities available at Club Rush! From Robotics to Drama, Birding to Food Science, Bowling to Book Club, there’s something for everyone to get involved, make new friends, and build community. Students had the chance to meet club leaders, ask questions, and sign up for activities that match their interests. It was an inspiring reminder that at SHS, there’s a place for every student to shine!
Coding, Creativity, and LEGO Fun in the Fab Lab!

The SIS Fab Lab offers a playful space where big ideas come to life, technology sparks curiosity, and every challenge inspires discovery.

SSD Curriculum Adoption
This year, the Scappoose School District will be adopting two sets of curriculum: Social Science and Health.
All proposed instructional materials have been reviewed, evaluated, and selected by the Oregon State Board of Education and are currently under further review by two separate Scappoose School District (SSD) K–12 Curriculum Adoption Steering Committees: a Health team and a Social Science team. The district’s local review process will begin in late August 2025 and is scheduled to be completed by June 2026.
There are two opportunities for parent and guardian involvement:
1. Join a Curriculum Committee
Each instructional material selection committee will include at least two parents or guardians representing both elementary and secondary levels. If you are interested in participating, please submit a brief statement of interest and relevant experience to the Director of Student Achievement at jhickman@scappoose.k12.or.us by September 2, 2025.
2. Preview and Provide Feedback
SSD invites parents and community members to preview and provide feedback on the proposed Health and Social Science instructional materials under consideration for adoption.
Instructional materials will be available for public review in the District Office Boardroom during the following timeframes:
- Health Curriculum: August 25, 2025 – September 26, 2025
- Social Science Curriculum (tentative): November 2, 2025 – December 2, 2025
Once the review process is complete, district staff will compile stakeholder feedback and present a formal adoption recommendation to the Scappoose School Board by June 8, 2026

Food For Kids
A Partnership Program Between
St. Vincent de Paul Scappoose Food Pantry
and Scappoose School District
Dear Scappoose School District Families,
This year, we are partnering with the St. Vincent de Paul Scappoose Food Bank to provide supplemental weekend food through the Food For Kids program. At the end of each week, Food for Kids offers a bag of nonperishable food items to students who are signed up. The bags are given out in as discreet a manner as possible through school support staff. At SHS this program operates with a food pantry model so our high school students can select the food items to take home. Scappoose High School students can connect with their school counselor or district Care Coordinator to learn how to access the pantry.
If you are interested in having your child/children participate in the Food for Kids program, please email their student(s) first and last name as well as the school that they attend to the district Care Coordinator and McKinney Vento Liaison, Justin Engstrom (jengstrom@scappoose.k12.or.us)
Please be aware that the donations are similar for each student and do not take into account individual student allergies or preferences.
If you have any questions, please contact the school counselor at the school your child attends or the district Care Coordinator at 971-290-8132.
2025-2026 SSD Bus Routes
A quick reminder: We start off assuming that ALL students will be riding the bus unless families tell us otherwise. So, please take a moment to log in to ParentVUE and update your information, including whether your student will be using our bus services.
We know that pick-up and drop-off times are important and our transportation partner, First Student, does its best to create route timetables that correlate with parent/guardian information in ParentVUE.
PLEASE NOTE: Timetables are subject to change slightly as we move forward through the first few weeks of school as additional students are added or removed as bus riders. We will communicate those changes as we receive the updates.
Wednesday/early release routes: for PM times on Wednesdays, you can subtract one hour from the PM schedule.
FirstView 1.0 Bus Tracking: If you are interested in the FirstView 1.0 Bus Tracking App, please navigate to our district webpage HERE for more information.
If you have questions about pick-up or drop-off locations, please contact First Student at 971-290-4020.
- Visit our First Student Bus Services page HERE, for the latest bus routes, schedules, and updates.
