Superintendent's Message

Dear FCPS Families,

I want to take time to assure you that the safety and well-being of our students remains our highest priority. We continuously review and update our safety protocols, provide ongoing training for our staff, and collaborate closely with local law enforcement to address the evolving needs of our community. We believe that a safe learning environment is essential for student success, and we are dedicated to maintaining this standard.

The safety and well-being of our students also includes maintaining appropriate professional boundaries between staff and students. Frederick County Public Schools holds all employees to high standards of conduct, and all staff members are expected to maintain professional boundaries with students and serve as a role model at all times. I encourage anyone, including students, who have concerns about a staff-student relationship or activities, to bring those concerns immediately to a school administrator.

We ask families to continue to have conversations with us about keeping our students safe. I invite you to join me at my next Community Conversations event on Thursday, March 13, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Bowman Library. This event will focus specifically on student safety, providing an opportunity for us to discuss any questions or concerns you may have. I look forward to engaging with you and working together to ensure every student feels safe, supported and ready to learn.

As always, I thank you for your continued support as we work together to do what is best for all students!

Sincerely,

Dr. George Hummer

Superintendent of Schools

Staff Spotlight
In recognition of School Social Work Week, March 2-8, Frederick County Public Schools is spotlighting all of our dedicated social workers. School social workers play a vital role in the educational system by bridging the gap between students, families, and the school environment. They provide comprehensive support to address social, emotional, and academic barriers that may hinder a student's success. This includes offering individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and connecting families with essential community resources. They also collaborate with school staff to promote a positive school climate, advocate for student well-being, and ensure equitable access to education, ultimately contributing to improved student outcomes. A shout out to our social workers: Maggie Kinsey, Candace Veney, Rhiannon Lalumandiar, Denise Britt, and Emily Sloan.

Senior Bureaucracy Presentations Senior Bureaucracy Presentations

Millbrook High School AP/DE Government students engaged in a popular project where they researched a U.S. Bureaucracy department or agency. They created presentations that included display boards, public-facing handouts, relevant artifacts, and interactive elements. Working in pairs, students alternated presenting and visiting other displays. This project helped students focus on collaboration and developing skills in organization, oral presentation, critical thinking, and creativity.

Inspiring Change Inspiring Change

Criminal Justice II students from Dowell J. Howard Center recently visited the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center (NRADC). The insightful policy discussions that students shared during their presentation to the NRADC Superintendent and his team inspired real change within the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center (NRADC). The ability of high school students to drive change in real-world policy is nothing short of remarkable.

Student Assessment Summary Report FAQ Student Assessment Summary Report FAQ

The Virginia Department of Education has provided an individualized report of your child's SOL testing history called the Student Assessment Summary Report. The report is available by accessing your student's Infinite Campus Backpack in the parent portal. FCPS has created this FAQ to help parents understand the significance of this report as well as access additional parent resources.
What is the Student Assessment Summary (SAS) Report? Each school year the Virginia Department of Education provides testing information to VVAAS (Virginia’s Visualization and Analytics Solution). This information was used to create an individualized SAS Report. The Student Assessment Summary (SAS) Report is a compilation of your student’s SOL testing history. This report gives you an opportunity to easily identify trends and performance within your student’s testing history. Information about how your student’s scores compare to other students who took the same test in Virginia is also included in the report. How do I interpret the data in my student’s SAS Report? Line Graph—The line graph shows your student’s state percentile and how your student’s performance compares to other students in Virginia who took the same test. Chart—The chart shows your student’s state performance level for each completed test and the name of the SOL test. The performance level will show if your student received a passing or failing score. This snapshot of your student’s testing history will aid you in identifying areas of strengths for your student as well as areas to provide additional support. Does my student need SOL scores to meet graduation requirements? Virginia students must earn five verified credits to meet high school graduation requirements. You can read more about the graduation requirements by scanning the QR code. Where can I find additional information regarding the SAS Report? Several resources for families regarding the SAS Report can be accessed by scanning the QR code. FrederickCountySchoolsVA.net/ grad-requirements www.frederickcountyschoolsva.net/ vvaas-resources
