Principal's Message Principal's Message

Dear Webster Community,

Our week started early with the planting of a second pollinator garden at Malibu Bluffs Park, in partnership with the City of Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains Fund. Thank you to all the Webster families who attended this community event. A special shout out to Webster dad and Malibu Recreation Manager, Chris Orosz, for organizing a day filled with sunshine, service, and learning.

Another highlight of the week was our Best on the Beach assembly, where we celebrated our April Respect Role Models! These students lead with kindness and care—for themselves, for others, and for our campus. Thank you to all the families who joined us to cheer them on 🐳

Looking ahead, we’re getting excited for our AstroCamp adventure! 4th graders will head out on Monday, May 4. Please arrive at Webster by 7:30 AM sharp so we can load the bus and depart on time.

We’re also thrilled to share that our School Site Council (SSC) officially approved Webster’s 2026–2027 Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) this week. This guiding plan outlines our goals and strategies to support academic growth, student well-being, and a positive school climate. Thank you to our SSC members for your commitment and collaboration all year long.

In other exciting news, we are moving forward with a major playground improvement project! With the support of our PTA and SMMUSD, plans are underway to replace our aging play structure with a modern, inclusive design that promotes safe, active play. Pending Board approval this month, installation is anticipated to begin in August. We’ll keep you posted as things progress!

This week, we also held our second and final lockdown drill of the year. The scenario was non-threatening, and students handled it with calm and care. One key reminder emphasized: if students hear “lockdown” and are not in class—perhaps in the restroom or transitioning from recess—they should move to the closest available safe space immediately. We’re grateful to our team and to School Resource Officer Carlos Vindell for their support in continuously improving campus safety.

As we gear up for the final stretch of the year, a reminder that CAASPP testing is now underway: 3rd graders begin this week, and 5th graders will be starting Math after completing their ELA exams. Attendance is especially important during these testing windows. Please ensure your child gets plenty of rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and comes to school feeling calm and confident. We believe in them and know they will shine.

Finally, if you have an incoming student for the 2026–27 school year, be sure their enrollment is complete to secure their spot. For families outside of SMMUSD, the Interdistrict Permit window opens May 15. Help us spread the word—Webster is a wonderful place to grow and learn, and we’d love to welcome more families into our community.

I’ll see you all very soon at Websterpalooza—get ready for an amazing afternoon of fun, music, and celebration!

✅ School Site Council Approves 2026–2027 SPSA ✅ School Site Council Approves 2026–2027 SPSA

This week, our School Site Council (SSC) officially approved Webster’s Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) for the 2026–2027 school year. This plan outlines our key priorities to support academic growth, equity, student well-being, and a positive school climate for every student. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our SSC members for their time, insight, collaboration, and partnership throughout the year. Your work ensures we continue to make thoughtful, data-informed, and student-centered decisions for our school community.

🔎 The 2026–2027 SPSA includes three focus areas:

🌊 Best on the Beach: Respect Role Models 🌊 Best on the Beach: Respect Role Models

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map Show in original size

This week, we continued our beloved Webster tradition — Best on the Beach — by celebrating students who exemplify the values that define The Webster Way.

For April, we honored our Respect Role Models — students who demonstrate respect through their actions and words. Whether it’s listening carefully, using kind and polite language, helping others, or showing sportsmanship on the yard, these Whales lead by example. They help make Webster a safe, inclusive, and welcoming place where everyone feels valued. Each honoree received a certificate and a Best on the Beach patch to add to their Webster collection.

🎉 Congratulations to Our Respect Role Models:

  • Eddie Behringer (nominated by Ms. Karli) — Eddie consistently shows respect during recess and with campus supervisors by helping clean up and responding with a positive attitude and kind words.
  • Coco Thompson (nominated by Ms. Leslie) — Coco is a focused learner who listens attentively, stays on task, and shows respect for her learning and classroom expectations.
  • Nico El Sawy (nominated by Ms. Stephanie) — Nico’s respectful actions shine through in his greetings, helpful nature, and excellent sportsmanship on the field.
  • Paisley Dunn (nominated by Ms. Papale) — Paisley’s caring heart and helpful spirit make her a natural role model, especially with our youngest learners.
  • Leo Ortega (nominated by Ms. Hannigan) — Leo shows consistent respect in every interaction, using kind language, engaging thoughtfully, and welcoming feedback with grace.

We are grateful to the families who joined us to celebrate these incredible students. Please join us in giving a round of applause to our Respect Role Models! 👏✨

🎉 Webster Playground Project! 🎉 Webster Playground Project!

With incredible support from SMMUSD, our Webster PTA (led by Lauren Franks Ifft) have spent months working with designers and contractors to propose an inspiring, modern play structure to replace our aging 20-year-old equipment. The new design prioritizes safety, accessibility, and active play—giving our students a space that fosters physical development, creativity, and social connection.

The District, in collaboration with Principal Diana, has been advancing plans for the replacement of the current playground equipment and surfacing. The proposal includes ADA upgrades as required by the Division of the State Architect (DSA). Here’s what’s coming up:

  • At the May 7, 2026 Board Meeting, the Board will be asked to approve the agreement with Huckabee for design and engineering services.
  • At the May 19, 2026 Board Meeting, the Board will vote on the purchase of new equipment from Dave Bang Associates, Inc. for an amount not to exceed $157,268.10, using the CMAS contract—saving time and cost by avoiding contractor markups.

The demolition, site preparation, equipment installation, and new play surface will be bid through a separate process while we seek DSA approval. Construction is expected to begin August 2026, with completion anticipated by September 30, 2026, followed by a brief closeout period. Final approval from DSA is anticipated in late July or early August.

Below are a few renderings of the new structure—thank you to everyone working hard to bring this dream to life!

📚 New Math Curriculum Adoption UPDATE 📚 New Math Curriculum Adoption UPDATE

At the April 23 Board of Education meeting, SMMUSD’s Educational Services team, alongside teachers and students, presented the recommendation for new math curricula to be implemented districtwide beginning in the 2026–2027 school year.

This recommendation is the result of an extensive pilot process led by a dedicated committee of math teachers representing every school site and grade level. Using tools from the California Department of Education and the updated 2023 California Mathematics Framework, the committee carefully evaluated state-approved curricula for alignment with standards, access and equity, organization, and teacher support.

🧮 Recommended Curriculum:

  • K–8 & Algebra I/II, Geometry: enVision, Savvas (2026)
  • Pre-Calculus: Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus, 8E, Cengage (2023)
  • AP Calculus: Calculus for AP: A Complete Course, 1E, Cengage (2019)
  • AP Statistics: Math Medic AP Statistics (2026)

The adoption ensures continued opportunities for advanced coursework while supporting deeper student understanding. If approved at the May 7 Board of Education meeting, the new curriculum will roll out in Fall 2026 with comprehensive teacher training and ongoing coaching.

📌 Community members may preview materials at the District Office and submit feedback via the Let’s Talk button on the SMMUSD website.

💻 Instructional Technology & Google Services Update 💻 Instructional Technology & Google Services Update

SMMUSD wants to share some clarity around Chromebook and digital tool use at Webster and across the district. Technology is never a replacement for great teaching—our educators remain at the heart of every lesson. Digital platforms like YouTube (in Education Restricted Mode), Google Translate, and Maps are thoughtfully integrated to support learning, foster creativity, and prepare students for a tech-driven future.

All students are automatically opted OUT of YouTube and other “Additional Google Services.”

✅ To give permission, log in to the Aeries Parent Portal, go to Student Info > Data Confirmation > Authorizations, and update your selection under “Additional Google Services.”

If permission is not granted, your student will still have access to core tools such as Google Classroom, Docs, Drive, and Gmail, but additional services will be disabled.

The most commonly used “Additional Services” include:

  • YouTube (Education Restricted Mode) – Students can view only age-appropriate educational videos.

  • Google Maps / Earth – Used in geography, social studies, and science.

  • Google Translate / Arts & Culture / Photos – Support for language development, cultural exploration, and multimedia projects.

🔐 Reminder: All student accounts are protected through ContentKeeper, a robust content filter used by SMMUSD to ensure students can access only safe, age-appropriate content while online.

To enhance student safety, all K–5 students will enter and exit through one main gate — located by the main office. This will help us maintain a secure and supervised environment for all students.

As part of our commitment to safety and being good neighbors, we kindly ask that you:

  • Use the designated pick-up and drop-off lane each day.

  • Avoid using the Our Lady of Malibu (OLM) parking lots.

  • Park only in the Webster lot.

  • Keep Pre-K/TK green curb drop-offs quick to ensure smooth turnover — this area is reserved for families using the Pre-K/TK gate. If your student enters through the main gate (K–5), please use the lower lot or main valet line.

Thank you for helping us ensure smooth arrivals and dismissals each day. Creating a safe and positive learning environment is our top priority — and it starts with all of us working together. We truly appreciate your support!
