UDL Tip #5
Living the digital dream
DID YOU KNOW?
UDL-IZE access to synchronous class meetings with live captioning
Do you have hearing impaired students in your class? Students with central auditory processing disorder? Students with ADHD? Capture their attention with live captioning. Captioning should always be on during a live meeting because many people will have an easier time concentrating on what you are saying if they can read it, too. Live captions—Display captions of the person speaking so that participants can follow along. Watch this 13 second video to learn how. Easy Peasy!
How To: Turn captions on in Hangouts Meet
Offer alternatives for auditory information.
Information conveyed solely through sound is not equally accessible to all learners and is especially inaccessible for learners with hearing disabilities, for learners who need more time to process information, or for learners who have memory difficulties. In addition, listening itself is a complex strategic skill that must be learned. To ensure that all learners have access to learning, options should be available for any information, including emphasis, presented aurally.
Optimize individual choice and autonomy
Offer choices for student access to your lessons. Those who need it will read along. Those who don;t need it will ignore it.
