Bloomz

I am so sorry for the delays in getting Bloomz up and running! We are having some technical difficulties with using a different platform. Please know that we have been working diligently with the company and our technology team to solve these issues and hope to have everything going next week. Thank you for your patience as we work through this.

Summer Reading Challenge

We hope you had a wonderful summer filled with fun, relaxation, and plenty of good books! For purposes of planning on your part, our Summer Reading Challenge work is due by Friday, September 19, 2025.

Students who return their completed reading challenge materials will be recognized for their hard work and commitment to keeping their reading skills sharp over the summer. Those who complete the challenge will also be treated to a special trip to Nancy’s for ice cream!

Please make sure your child’s bingo board/reading log (or other assigned work) is turned in to their classroom teacher by the deadline.

Sporting Event Supervison

At last week's football game, there were a few incidents involving elementary students that could have been avoided with closer supervision. We kindly ask that families keep a close eye on their children during all sporting events. Please do not allow students to wander unattended, as our goal is to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Thank you for your support in keeping our events family-friendly and safe.

What is Bullying?

Mrs. Teed has already started getting into classrooms to talk with students about bullying. We want students to know what bullying is, who their trusted adults are, and how to report bullying at NBES. One of our goals this year is to educate student and families more on bullying. There are so many misconceptions. Watch the short clip below to be sure you understand the true definition of bullying so you can support your child if they ever feel like they are being bullied.

Cell Phones & Smart Watches

Just a reminder of the no cell phone and smartwatch policy. Students may keep cell phones in their backpacks turned off. Smartwatches are not permitted at school and should remain at home or turned off in backpacks. They are a distraction to the learning environment so I am asking for your cooperation with upholding this policy. Please talk to your students about this as well.

The food service department asks that you complete the Child Nutrition and Education Benefits Application. This form is important for funding for our district and also for providing resources to our families, such as Title I services, Blessings in a Backpack, Toys for Tots and summer camp scholarships.

Fall Testing

During the first few weeks of school, students will begin fall testing. The information collected from these assessments will help us determine the best learning path for each student. We ask that you make sure your child has a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast to keep their minds fueled.

Below are the testing dates:

September 16- NWEA Math for K-5th Grade

Lory's Place Grief Group

Our school is partnering with Lory’s Place, a Grief Healing and Education Center for Children and Families in St. Joseph, to offer a school-based grief support group for students. The group will meet one class period, one day a month throughout the school year and will be facilitated by trained bereavement staff from Lory’s Place.

This group provides education and peer support for children who are grieving. It does not provide assessments, diagnosis, evaluations, private therapy, or counseling, but instead creates a safe and supportive space where students can share and connect.

If you are interested in having your child participate, please email mteed@nbas.org. Parents will be asked to provide consent before participation.

For questions, you may contact the school counselor, Melissa Teed at mteed@nbas.org or Lory’s Place directly at 269-983-2707.

Positive Behavioral Inteventions and Supports (PBIS)

Our schoolwide expectations for students are:

Be responsible. Be respectful. Be safe.

Dog Searches

New Buffalo Area Schools is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for all students. As part of this commitment, we are partnering with local law enforcement to help ensure our schools remain nicotine and drug-free.

This year, our schools will conduct planned safety sweeps with specially trained detection dogs. These sweeps will include hallways and lockers.

We want to assure you that these measures are preventative in nature and are being implemented to reinforce our school community’s shared expectation of a safe and drug-free learning environment.

Thank you for your support as we continue to prioritize the well-being of our students. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact the school office.
